You know what? I am about SICK as all (bleep) of these companies who are manufacturing phones that are only usable on ONE cell phone network. These manufacturers and the cell phone companies who agree to such deals can all go to... well you know. I don't think that I am alone in this feeling either, and I cannot believe it is legal.

I NEED my phone in a GSM network, because I travel a lot to Europe, so I can't go with Sprint.

Why do manufacturers insist of selling less of their phones by restricing themselves to only ONE provider. F***ing buddy-system.

With crap like that you drive consumers into criminal actions like hacking software for their phones. They are just asking for it. And the consumer (the one who spent money!) is the one who gets screwed over.

* With the new Mercedes C-Class you are ONLY allowed to drive on state highways (no freeway or tollway).

It's not going to remain sprint only. Palm ALWAYS ships to Sprint first, with GSM carriers following later. Verizon is typically the last to pick up the new models.

It sickens me that companies will have exclusives for soandso company. I have a Treo 650 unlocked and use it on T-Mobile. The last palm released offical for T-Mobile was the 600, and it wasn't that good of a system. Lately I've been pondering about getting the Motorola Ming, looks like it has the options I want, minus the keyboard. I just hope eventually this new Palm will be released on the GSM network and someone unlocks it for T-Mobile, I like simplicity, I don't need
all these uncessary fancy dodads like the iPhone. Companies needs to stop giving monopolies, not everybody wants to go with Verizon, Cingular, whatever, everybody has their own preferance for what ever service provider they want to choose. To make money, you need to allow freedom of choice. Not force people into something they don't want, why else are there tons of unlocking schemes for the iphone, some people hate AT&T.

It's $99 dollars after $100 dollar rebate (requiring new service contract). It's not $99, it's $199.

... and Palm increasingly has no good answers for power users or anybody looking to them for leadership (a given several years ago). Granted the PDA market virtually vanished and smartphones are getting old too. Not only is the market shrinking and competition growing, Palm really doesn't seem to have the resources to compete in the long run. Look at the introductions of the last 3 years: A few warmed up versions of the Treo with relatively minor changes. Nothing even close to the wow-factor and vision of the iPhone (let alone media hype)! Further, support for existing devices (like the LifeDrive) is virtually non-existent. (I have been following Palm for a long time, and the abysmal reliability of the LifeDrive with no fixes even 3 years after introduction pretty much cured me from Palm, not to mention that the LifeDrive isn't even compatible with Vista and updates don't include the LifeDrive anymore (despite it being the "latest" PDA).

The Centro is a good "me-too" design and it remains to be seen if overall functionality improved a bit. At least it doesn't seem as clunky as the Treo. However, it hardly will excite anybody. At least there are plenty applications available from the start.

The carrier locked phones are an American problem as there is no common network or standard. I think the Altel commercial with the hamster in a cage probably applies to all of them. (I am with Cingular and at least they're using GSM which also works in large parts of the World.)

It is a great phone. I just wish one could use it with other cell phone services. I prefer AT&T Mobile. It would be neat if there was a variation for AT&T-M users (hint hint to Palm[?]). :) It would be perfect for my needs (if only it was not a one cell phone company device :( ).

I read somewhere, but I can't remember where and I don't want to look it up, that Sprint has a 90-day exclusivity agreement for the Centro. I expect it'll be available on other networks thereafter.

I'd like to have an iPhone, but I'll never do business with AT&T. If my next phone is a Centro, I'll wait until another carrier offers it. I've heard Sprint's customer service is worse than AT&T's.

It's tough being a cellular phone customer though. I've been a Verizon customer for a while, but I don't want to renew my contract because I don't like the way they lock down their phones, and I think there is too much of a premium for their data services.

What's the story on all of different wireless networks anyway? I read 3G, EvDO, Edge, blah, blah, blah. Is there a concise resource that outlines the differences between each of these networks? I'd just like to have some access to the web via my phone, although I don't want to have a costly data plan.

To 'am I crazy..', I agree. It should be free to Sprint users and other cellular phone service subscribers, it should be $100. This would lean toward Sprint but does not make it useable only by Spring users.

If the 90 day agreement is true, I look forward to AT&T Mobile being able to offer it. I would upgrade my phone. I don't need a full smart phone. The Centro has what I want but not what I don't need. :)
