People can, do and will download content over the internet anyway, there is no foolproof DRM scenario that will ever be able to stop that fact and enforcing copyright over digital content is the creation of an artificial monopoly to counter the fact that digital content is an unlimited resource...unlike possession of land or housing, for instance which is a limited resource where possession is a zero sum game...if I possess it, it is out of circulation, no one else can possess it.

Digital content by nature is merely 0s and 1s that can be infinitely replicated and distributed at little or no cost.

Price in capitalist philosophy is a measure of supply and demand. If supply is low and demand is high, the price rises, if supply is high in comparison to demand the price is low.

For an unlimited resource, the supply is potentially limitless compared to any demand, and therefore the price should reflect this fact.

However, the recording industry refuses to accept the changing market environment in technologies and uses its money and power to keep us all locked into an outdated dependency system that allows them to keep their traditional revenue flows.

And that the process of having an album out and promoted helps to make artists bigger so record labels are now putting into record contracts that they get a piece of that money. So in the end consumers will need to pay.

Another thing is that while illegal downloads have been happening recording has gotten cheaper thanks to hard disc recording and computer based mixing. But pre amps, microphones and purpose built rooms with great acoustics cant enjoy a great price drop , so eventually consumers will have to either put up with music that grows in price to match inflation or get lower quality music.
