Schaumburg (IL) - Motorola is reportedly thinking about a new touch-screen cell phone that would be in direct combat with Apple's iPhone.

At an investors' conference, Motorola's chief financial officer Tom Meredith said, "We mau introduce touch-screens in the US," according to a Market Watch report.

Motorola has released touch-screen handsets in Asian countries, where advanced mobile technology has historically been more widely accepted.

Meredith reportedly went on to claim that US companies were previously unwilling to market touch-screen phones to North American customers.  That all changed with the iPhone.  "Its user interface is exceptional," said Meredith of Apple's two-month-old phone.

Despite critical acclaim, Apple recently slashed the price of the 8 GB iPhone by $200, one of the earliest price cuts in the company's history.  The hope is the lower price, now $400, will allow Apple to increase sales of the device for the holiday season.  Apple also announced plans to discontinue the lower capacity 4 GB iPhone.

Motorola did not announce any firm plans for its potential touch-screen phone.

We've had touchscreen Smartphones for years now... Well granted "touch" as in stylus or thumbnail...

Hmmm... Multiple touch on a phone...? Was bound to happen anyways. To the person about me, "Sam W", this is about multiple touch, meaning that you can now simultaneously touch more than one spot on the screen. See, you couldn't do that earlier, and you could, at any given moment in time, have only 1 point of reference on the screen that was recieving the touch signals. Well, Personally, I understand the use of such technology on devices such as MS Surface, and large touch screen panels, and large touch screen devices in general, but I don't see the point of bringing multiple touch into a phone... You might have to actually grow your nails to use the feature, since now everyone has tiny fingers... Well, my entire comment was based on the title of the article, and if it did turn out that Motorola were simply trying to release a simple touch screen, then my apologies to "Sam W", and acolades to him on highlighting the pointlessness of this article.

Multi Touch as in the iPhone

Abhishek, they are referring to the same kind of multitouch used on the iPhone, where you use 2 fingers to zoom a photo in (by separating the fingers on the screen) or out (by moving them closer to one another), for example. Although I haven't experienced it, from the videos it seems like a very comfortable way of interacting with the media on the phone.

multi-use phone

Since motorola is planning to roll-out a multi-touch phone, why not incorporate A/V controller on the phone that can learn or by downloading any controller scheme of any A/V product like Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, and so forth. I'd love to see that in the offing.
