How much power was cranked into this study? MHz (Mega-Hertz) just means millions of Hz (cycles per second). 440 Hertz is the pitch of A above middle C. You can play that note on a piano and it can be quiet and peaceful. You can also amplify the crap out of that with speakers the size of your car and it will be deafening! The simple fact that some study was performed at 875 MHz does not mean that the power pumped into the signal was comparable to that of a cell phone.
It's almost like saying that "reports show a human drowned in 80 degree water" The temperature of the water isn't nearly as important as the quantity of water, in this fictitios example.
Please, if you are going to write a technical article for a technical website/journal, please include something technical and educated in the article.

The article clearly states "The study exposed human cells to radiation of 875 megahertz, slightly less than the level most handsets emit." See the word radiation there? The only frequencies a human can hear are in the hz-Khz range. The article isn't talking about the pitch of the sound coming from the headset. It's referring to radiation that your are holding against your ear for the entire length of the call... So I will not comment on your statement about education.
Secondly, for those who in their amazing knowledge have begun to already refute this scientist's claims, remember that we are talking about an indication of cell division. This may be accelerated by the presence of the radiation, when the radiation exposure ceases, so might the cell division. So give your self 35 years of cell division on a microbiological level and you might be on to something... Notice how many children have cancer, now think about how many have cell phones... Not many of each, right? Maybe we are looking at a correlation of cell-phone radiation exposure and tumors.

The earth could benefit from this if suddenly an entire generation of people died of cancer.

Cancer takes time to grow, just like a person who smokes does not get lung cancer immediately.
Whether we believe the results of the study or not is immaterial. If it is true then in 10 to 20 years there might be a sudden explosion in brain tumor. If it is not true then life goes on for most of us. It is very difficult to live without cellphone for most of us. Simply try not to use it excessively just to be on the safe side. We wouldn't like to be told we have brain tumor in 10 years time. It would be too late to regret.

Every person on this planet is exposed to gamma rays from even before they were born. It comes through our atmosphere from the sun naturally and up from the earth as well. Admittedly, not much but it is there. However, only sizably large doses are know to harm you.

Even a sound, any sound, can kill you if it is loud enough. It would have to be orders of magnitude louder than anything we experience in the day to day, though.

Problem with scientists is they try to draw conclusions based on clinical results which can often be ambiguous or poorly controlled.

Physicists (not scientists) have long stated that it is impossible for cell phone radiation to cause cancer. The reason things like exposure to UV-rays and X-rays cause cancer? It's because the energy of those photons is sufficient to tear electrons away from atoms and wreck havoc. The key here is the frequency of the photon, not the radiation amplitude or power(simply more photons).

Microwave radiation (less energy per photon then visible light) cannot knock electrons loose. The radiation from the cellphone is harmless to human tissue.

Three new types a brain tumors have been discovered since the coming of cellphones. heck, my grandmother who turned 85 years old has smoked all her life so i guess tobacco products do not affect the lungs, heart or any major organs. But you are all blinded by the necessity of having a cell. i work cell phone provider who offered me a free cell and i refused it. all you need is a little organization and you won't need to use the cell. just turned 30, i'm an accountant and i will never get one. if in twenty years, when the ten year olds who have to have a cellphone reach my age haven't developped some kind of tumor, i guess that will prove that i was wrong. but i think you'll see the kids bringing there parents to court for having forced them to get one. better be safe than sorry and guess what, i save 50$ per month not having one.

Cellular microwaves do cause cancer, it's always been a fact. Why would anyone want a half watt to a full watt transmitter anywhere near there brain?? Just put your cellphone in the microwave and close the door, 5 to 7 seconds later you should have 0 bars, both my nokia and motorola phones drop down 5 bars 4 3 2 1 none. This test does not require the microwave to be on :) Microwave ovens are built with a wire mesh to keep the microwaves in, so naturally they block cellphones from transmitting and receiving. It may take 200 to 2500 hours of exposure who knows but we should be seeing brain tumors and other mutations caused by cellular m-waves, no one believes it because everyone has one and thinks it's normal "why would they sell devices that could cause cancer??" There will be a huge number of brain tumors, unfertile men/women, birth deformities & various forms of cancers. Cellphones will be to blame, someday it may be looked at as the "Biggest self inflicted blunder that mankind ever committed"

I'm not sure your argument refutes the results of the study. You are talking radiation damage which is not the same thing as cancer, just one of the hypotheses for what causes it. Another hypothesis for example is that cancer (or at least some forms of it) is caused by aberrant behavior of residual stem cells. This may not be related to radiation damage at all. Finally, the article talks about cell division, which is several layers above physics and radiation damage. In short, your argument does not apply.

i think the point of the article was that they were actually investigating the cell phone radiation's effect on humans, rather than just reciting "fact" out of a 20 year old text book.

Physics to the rescue? Although you may need more energy per photon (higher frequency) to knock electrons loose, this does not mean that lower energies cannot influence the many important chemical processes that take place when a cell replicates, e.g. DNA replication. For example, microwave radiation heats up matter by making the water molecules vibrate, who says this does not affect their ability to function as they should? Current radiation safety standards are based solely on the temperature increase caused by it (a cell dies at about 42 degrees centigrade), but it maybe time to look at other possible effects. Some studies show correlation between cancer and low-level EM radiation, others show no relation. We have to remember though that in statistics a result of 'no relation' is a 'weak' result that actually says: 1) there is no relation or 2) or study is not properly set up to detect the relation. Finding a relation is usually a much 'stronger' result. Until we know, we should err on the safe side.
And oh, yes, I have a degree in nuclear physics (although I am not active in th field of EM radiation and safety at all).

What the physicists can say is that Mobile Phone radiation ALONE can't cause damage to human tissue that is not replicating itself.

The problem comes when the cells are replicating itselves: this radiation could cause replication problems, and this study just proves that.

As if we are all going to die in ten years, please take in account that:
1. We have a calcium insulating structure (i.e:skull)
2. Our mobile phones usaully work at low power levels, it is unusual for most of us to have low coverage and thus high power.
3. Even if the replication error happens, our body has defensive measures against this, and most of the malignant cells will be destroyed.
4. Most of the malignant cells wont be viable.

So, according to this report, it would no kill us, but it is reasonable to suppose that it will cause a significant increase in cancer..

There was a study in Europe that said that cell phones do not cause cancer. Now they say it does? Who are we to believe?

Seriously, that comment right there tells you everything you need to know about the credibility of this article/study. What happens every time we drive by a 50,000 Watt radio station, walk out side on a bright sunny day, walk down a flight of steps, or drive to work. We are constantly being cut through by many types of radiation every nanosecond of our lives, even before electricity. The last thing we need to worry about is the 1.9Ghz .3 Watt cell phone we hold to our heads.

While this report is quite sensational (the science paper reports short-term activation of a cellular pathway than induces transription and other cellular processes from exposure to cellphone radiation) there are a multitude of cellphone epi papers showing an increased risk of brain tumors, particulary for users who have used a cellphone for more than 10 years.

This quote comes from a Newscientist article on the same study mentioned here.

"Claims of connections between cellphone radiation exposure and health problems such as cancer have been controversial, largely due to a lack of convincing evidence, but also because no clear mechanism was known by which radiation at cellphone frequencies and power levels could harm living cells. The frequencies are too low to damage DNA directly and the power of the signal is well below the level that could overheat cells. Previous evidence of non-thermal effects on cells is mixed, because it is very difficult to expose cells to radiation without heating them to some degree."

Moderation is a word seldom used any longer. Studies came out when artificial sweetners were new that pointed to lab results where rodents got tumors from eating the sweetners. But most of those articles failed to point out that the rodents were given nearly nothing but sweetener for prolonged periods of time. Eat nothing but artificial sweeteners and you may get cancer...talk on your cell phone 24 hours a day and you might get cancer. A little moderation goes a long way. While tumors may be eventually traced to cell phone usage in a precious few people, the numbers will likely never conclusively support the notion that cell phones cause cancer for the masses.

And the article is labeled for pure sensationalism - "10 minutes on cell phone can trigger cancer" but then saying that the study measured a frequency range outside where most cell phones operate - OK, how about we expose ourselves to an X-ray machine while holding a cell phone...that's a different frequency range also, and you might expect to see some negative results.

while all these scientific studies are sensationalized by the press when you look at the meat of it this has some interesting ramifications i.e. it might actually mean something.

@Ryan and cheepgeek: You both missed the point that sound is AIR waves while cell phone signals are EMF waves, but I DO agree with the point that cheepgeek was trying to make: The frequency of the signal has less to do with the result that do the signal strength, wattage, although, at certain frequencies, oscillation at molecular occurs which means would result in far less power is needed to heat up a molecule (Which differs from molecule to molecule. This is how a Microwave oven works: Transmitting a very strong EMF signal at the natural frequency of water).

Also, because 1800MHz (Which again, will not be exclusively used), is a harmonic of 900MHz, it is safe to assume that 1800MHz will also be affected (Though less). Cancer is an epidemic (three family members have dies at fairly young ages) and don't think that all causes have been identified. Not even close. Don't blame the scientists for trying to find them. Its difficult because the results are statistical, so its not whether they do or don't, but what are the chances, how may it contribute, how are they related to use. etc.

Remember when people just got old and died, died in their sleep, or got sick and died? Do we really have to classify and quantify everything to the nth degree. Heck, enjoy your life and make it fulfilling rather than brooding over what type of end you'll reach. It will end, after all.

In the news, they have reported that 1 out of 2 people will develop cancer in some form over a life time in quebec. This a simplistic statistic, but if we look at it closely, the older we get, the more probable it is ... no wonder the gvt is calling for a nation conf on the subject. I wonder what the stat is else wher in n america ?

If you're afraid of electromagnetic radiation that can cause cancer, better stay out of the sunshine. Power level of 1000 Watts/Square meter AND some ionizing radiation (UV) too. Cell phones are not 1/2 Watt anymore. PCS is more like milliWatts to increase battery life.
This article does NOT tell you much, like how much radiated power, or references to the real article etc.
Either way, there is not enough information in this article to be of much use to me. Maybe there's more info in some scientific journal.

Its true..I agree.. i have lost my spatial intelligents because i was chating with my GF for hours on the phone ..and YES i cant remember my own city well..and it makes you forgetful and has a harmful effect on the brain... FROM now i am going to put my mobile in my pocket also .. I WILL not use my mobile for dictionaries and all that I will keep it in my soxs and use an earphone..

I used to repair cell phones at component level - often whern the thing was blasting 5 watts of power, I would get a small burn on my fingers - a white burn about 2 mm wide - its about time some one did a full long term test of these devices personaly I hate using them !

I think that it can happen. I mean not everyone who uses a cell phone is going to get cancer. It is saying that radiation can trigger it. So I wouldn't take this information lightly.
