The upcoming uSSD 5000 solid state disk will be available with capacities ranging from 2 to 8 GB are positioned to replace hard disk drives in sub-$250 PCs, the manufacturer said today. The new drives are designed as USB modules that measure 27 mm x 38 mm, about one-fourth the size of a conventional 1.8" hard disk.

One of the first computers integrating the uSSD 5000 will be Intel's classmate PC, which is aimed at educational markets in emerging nations.

Consumers will not be able to purchase the drive, as it is embedded directly onto the motherboard. According to Sandisk, the drive is compatible with Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded for Point of Service and Windows CE, as well as Linux operating systems.

Pricing has not been announced.
