Chicago (IL) – Chicago city officials have scrapped their plans for city-wide Wi-Fi after they discovered that it would cost too much money and serve too few residents.  The officials believe residents wouldn’t have used the system because people already have numerous connectivity options like regular wireless hotspots, EVDO and DSL.

The system would have coverage 228 square miles and made it one of the largest cities with public wireless access.  Chicago had been negotiating with Earthlink, but the company wanted the city to sign a multi-year wireless agreement in exchange for running the system.
