Took longer to unlock than I had expected. I will give it a few weeks to make sure that this is working as expected. Then...I will THINK about getting one.

Now I can get one! I gotta hand it to Apple, though, for their simlock to have lasted this long shows that they really put some serious effort into it. :)

I can't believe that Apple went with AT&T for the iphone. Their service is so poor in Southern California that we dumped them and got Verizon which is so much better at home and everwhere else. I am interested in an iphone but would not take a free phone and free service if it came with AT&T.

It's not like you're stealing cell service or breaking something you did not purchase. For example (very possible scenario), you buy an iPhone, break contract after 3 months because you've moved to Europe, pay termination fee, and now you're stuck with a brick... You then proceed to unlock the phone so that you can use a different sim and retain phone functionality. The phone is NOT the property of ATT or Apple because they SOLD you a phone at retail price. It SHOULD be illegal for them to REQUIRE you to use their service.

Given the fact that this process is all software, what is keeping apple from pushing an update through iTunes that requires a 'software update' to the iPhone before it will allow it to sync again. Said software update would once again return the device to Cingular's contractual reins.

Under the DMCA, it is NOT illegal to bypass/defeat cell phone carrier locking mechanisms. Apple/ATT can sue these guys all they want, but they will not get anywhere. For once, U.S. copyright laws are more fair than in most european countries!

Therefore, in the US your options are AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile. T-Mobile (in general) blows so guess what your left with? Who cares if it's unlocked if no other GOOD carrier supports it? This is good for Europe/Asia IF it supports all the bands needed for global GSM (they use different frequency), but doesn't do squat for us here in the US.

verizon and sprint use cdma network and is not compatible with gsm network. most of europe use gsm network... the iphone uses the gsm network but on the slower edge network.. hardware upgraded needed to work on newest gsm (UMTS/HSDPA) network speeds. i would think there will be a upgrade when sold in europe. BTW AllTel, Helio uses sprint network.
If you travel to europe and want an iphone unlock it then get a local sim from a carrior there. no roaming... or unlock it if you are satisfied with Tmoble... remember its going to be slow on any GSM network because of the out of date phone networking support (edge)Avg. upload speed 40-80 kbps Avg. download 75-135 kbps..

i love all the people bitching about the different service providers.

i wont go over the fact that the iphone is a gsm phone and therefore would be using at&t/t-mobile, since the people above me just mentioned it. however, i just think its hilarious that all of you are complaining about the 'poor' service and slow up/down speeds on the phones, when ALL of the "3G" phones are still slow as shit for the most part. not to mention the fact that none of the service providers have their fastest services available in that many areas.

its time to get over it and realize that cell technology for now is still in its beginning years and it will take quite a while (years) for ANY service provider to 1) get the tower coverage necessary to handle the bandwith needs with current cell technology or 2) roll out newer technologies (wi-max/etc).

No unlocking isn't illegal. Apple most likely won't drop a lawsuit bomb because the only thing it can do for them is boost sales. ATT might drop a suit to apple for not doing anything about it, which may have some clout and will cause them to update thought iTunes "re locking" the phone, and people will pay more money to get it unlocked again. Theres a FAQ on the company's website that describes the whole thing. There's some shady small text at the bottom that basically says that the phone will re lock when apple updates.
