Leipzig (Germany) – Intel officially introduced a new Core 2 Extreme model for notebooks: The X7900 model increases the performance for high-end notebooks with a clock speed of 2.8 GHz.

According to heise online, the processor comes with the regular 4 MB L2 cache and support for FSB800, which was introduced earlier this year as part of the Santa Rosa platform. As the X7800, the new 7900 is also rated at a thermal design power of 44 watts, which means that you will not be able to find this CPU in your average notebook, due to its special cooling needs.

The tray price of the chip is $851. The company did not say if and when it will reduce the price for the X7800 version.

The first customer to get this high-end processor was once again Apple, which quietly began offering the chip two weeks ago for its new iMac. A 2.8 GHz iMac with a 24" monitor is currently offered from $2300, which translates into a $250 premium over a 2.4 GHz (non-"Extreme") model. Intel gave Apple preferred treatment before when it provided the company with 3.0 GHz Xeon quad-core processors several months before the chip was officially announced.

Does any body knows if a "Core2quad" can be installed on an iMac with 667Mhz bus? (it is actually core2duo rigth now), What proccessor model should I buy? I do not care to open a hole in the chassis to get it more vent.

It would be a quad2core and I would say no since the Q2D requires either a 1066FSB or 1333FSB. It sounds like your mac is running a mobile version of the C2D as they are offered in 667Mhz bus and like my little M1330 with 800Mhz bus.

Core2Quad

Currently there is still no quad core for notebooks. Plus you don't want to take apart your iMac. My brother did for a hard drive upgrade but for the cpu you need to take basically everything out. For the average person they would end up destroying it. Anyways this is a Core 2 Duo. Not Quad.

yeah, ive taken apart two laptops in the last month, usually i end up losing half the 2mm screws that they do everything up with :( My advice if you pull it apart, get a fridge magnet or something along those lines, and use it to keep all the screws on.

Or you could not be numb enough to by a Mac at 2x the price in the first place since now that there are mac options that don't involve the "G" series processors, you're just buying machine that will host any normal OS. and if you lose screws while working on a laptop, that qualifies you for the special olympics because let's be honest, if you don't know what you're doing and aren't smart enough to figure it out, why are you trying?

give me a break 44 watts, mine is 110 watts

Greetings... Come on a 44 watt TDP processor generates barely any heat. My Opteron 185 in my Voodoo ENVY U709 has a TDP 0f 110 watts. My heatsink is 2 lbs, and it has 2 70mm blowers cooling it. DOnt tell me, 44 watts is a high TDP, that BS. Plus my Opteron clocks in at 2.6 GHz. Wow Intel topped that by 200mhz. Like it is going to be any faster. Look at the benchmarks, the Opteron 185 is 4.93% slower than the Core 2 Extreme at 2.93 GHz. That small percentage of power difference is not noticeable at all. Plus my Opteron was only $330, not $850. K-TRON

44 Watts *IS* a high TDP, since we are comparing similar INTEL-BRANDED *MOBILE* CPUs. Your entire posts compares apples to oranges touting TDP specs of a CPU from a completely different manufacturer with a completely different architecture and platform.
