It's been on the shelf because they could never solve the problems of horrendous interference to AM, shortwave, FM, police, fire and ham radio frequencies. When Katrina hit all cell phones went dead, the cops complex radio systems were down and out. Only the ham radio guys were getting messages out. SO yeah, lets jam over the air radio of all types so the big corporations can save a few pennies over installing a real viable high speed system.

I wonder how broad this broadband is going to be.
In the US 3 Mbps is considered 'broad'....In the EU this is 20Mbps or even more. In Japan in Korea broad is really Broad : upto 40 Mbps.
Maybe this subject is matter for a thesis: Measuring the development of a country by the size of their bradband infrastructure.

You must work for the cable company, as it's terribly obvious you don't have a clue. This is great news. More competition for the cable companys. It's long overdue.

Unfortunetely the reality is that they are NOT going to lay fiber down over thousands of miles to serve those living in rural areas. So for many people, the only options for internet are Dialup, Satellite, and eventually BPL. Dial-up is crap, and Satellite is both poor and expensive.

I hear a lot of people whining about the US lagging behind other countries in broadband adoption. Well, we have a lot of country to cover, and this is one of the best ways to reach rural citizens.

Last I heard it was shelved because of problems with propagating through the transformers and signal noise and did not have anything to do with rf interference.

I live on a ranch north of Fresno, California, and my only option has been practically satellite. I've been waiting forever for some sort of wired broadband to reach out here, but it's never happened. I hope this works out in Texas and they bring it out here.

And trust me, satellite sucks, especially for gaming (However, as I've been told, this is mainly due to FCC restrictions on signal strength).

Satellite connections suck for gaming, not because of a limit in signal strength but because of the sheer enormity of roundtrip times inherent to packets traversing this type of link. Latencies, or ping times go through the roof because of how long it takes to get data up to a satellite and back (especially geostationary satellites with very high orbits).
