Tokyo (Japan) – AMD has announced what is expected to be the final and highest performing version of its 90 nm dual-core desktop processor series.

The Athlon 64 X2 6400+ "Black Edition" clocks in at 3.2 GHz, the same as the recently announced and related Opteron 2224 and 8224 processors. The new chips with AM2 socket are based on the company's 90 nm CPU core with 2 MB L2 cache and a thermal design power (TDP) of 125 watts.

There is some confusion why AMD decided call the new CPU "Black Edition". This moniker recently has been used by Mercedes-Benz to name an especially sporty and limited production version of its CLK series, indicating that AMD also had a special and limited production model in mind. It is unclear whether AMD will be carrying over the new brand to the upcoming Phenom X2 and X4 processors.

AMD said that the processor will be available at the end of August for about $240, which translates into a 35% premium over the 3.0 GHz 6000+ processor, which is currently offered for a tray price of $178. A few U.S. retailers have made the CPU available for pre-odder on their websites with prices ranging from about $260 to $290.
