This kind of technology has been available for over a decade, just not at cost/size levels where you can have one on your desk.

I've had a number of resin-based prototypes formed by third parties (for very reasonable cost), typically for going to tradeshows with a new product. These days, with painted plastics common in even shipping products, it's very easy to make people believe that you've got "the real thing". People used to consider silver-painted plastic a giveaway of a one-off resin casing.

More impressive are similar devices that employ powdered metal to make actual, functional machine parts. The US Navy has looked into these technologies with the idea that a computer and a 3D forming machine could replace a huge percentage of the parts inventory kept aboard, say, an aircraft carrier.
