forgot to mention that the DXdiag tool is also nothing new, but 4 sound tabs is quit interesting. I have 5 sounds tabs in mine due to a program that is loaded that puts 4 more sound drivers on the system. so it looks like nothing new in either place, just a newer version number.

I use Vista Ultimate on Micro Atx mainboard & it works fine, well AOL dosn't, yet nearly 99.9% of all features function. However, it took over 4 gb of updates before each partition was satisfied. So any Service Pack will be DVD event, as many havn't such bandwidth.

Well if its DVD disc, eventually, when full SERVICE PACK 1 is released & has all available space used by todays simple updates, (there are hundreds listed on HOTFIX.COM), why not "go all way?", make em keep up with: Dual Layer dvd player, that way it is more likely all updates needed will be on disc.

7gb or 8gb of Vista Service Pack 1 today is about where many new NT levels should start, in sense that SERVICE PACK 1 is larger than original software O/S Disc. Similar to 98.

Also, since Server beta3 2008 is so clean it needs no Updates, Basicly NT6 is Stable Build at 6.0001. Why have SERVICE PACK at all, SELL SERVICE PACK 1 on Dual Layer Disc for those whom insist upon that much for: $59.95. USD, DHL included.Heck, small Game Pack,too, for value.

I should have listened to my Brother when he told me to hold off on installing Vista untill SP1 was released. But I thought it would be "fun" so I did it.
I've been wanting to trash it and go back to XP ever since. I hope SP1 turns Vista into a decent OS.

I have 12 sound tabs but that is because I have Muvaudio.

I'm moving over to Ubuntu and later a different flavor of linux. Only issues that is holding me back from truly ween myself from Windows are my programs. There are alot of decent replacements for Linux but some programs I'm gonna see if I can get it to run under wine. If not, I will use the VMWare Server to run WinXP for those programs which will be rare.

Who still uses XP original? Or XP SP1 for that matter? Remember it took SP2 and a host of third party software and tweaks to mature XP as a reasonably reliable OS. Perhaps Vista will go the same way. In the meantime I'll persever with XPSP2 until Vista has proved itself which means by that time M$ will be pushing its next OS...

I've been using Vista since launch, and apart from a rocky start with drivers for my nVidia 8800 card, it runs very well now. The only thing that really has a hard time working properly is iTunes/Quicktime, especially when video files are concerned. But after having a look at the safari Beta on my XP laptop, I seriously doubting Apple's ability to write working software, so I don't blame MS for the issues with iTunes...

The lamest excuse i've been hearing: "Remeber XP; It took bla bla years to become stable". Years go by, we have progress everywere, so why can't Microsoft learn from it's misstakes? XP had to "wait" to become a decent OS. Five years later, a new operating system and it's the same story... I don't even know if it's sad or funny, but it's definetly no excuse for Vista for sucking so much...

Hmm.. I have been in the industry for awhile and have seen how these things can work out.. I mean.. Win98 had issues till i believe the second rev (damn been so long since i have seen a 98 machine..lol) Biggest disaster for an OS had to be WinME, XP was descent ,imho, and only got better as it aged..lol

For Vista.. I have yet to install it and will follow the same route as others.. wait until SP1 and only then will I install it... as a dual boot machine.. XP has rarely let me down.. I also plan on going the 64bit route with Vista so I want to retain the ensured functionality of my 32 bit apps by keeping XP on another set of drives.

VISTA was the worst expirience I have ever encounterd as far as OS's are concerned. I installed it as an upgrade on a DELL XPS 410 and lo and behold, no sound and the video was horrid.
After searching for 2 days, found a Beta driver for the XFi soundcard, but barely got Stereo sound.
A ton of software issues, would not run it at all or crash, combined with Hardware driver issues, from Cameras to copiers to scanners, convinced me to uninstall VISTA and go back to XP Pro.
This OS was not ready for release and besides WIN ME is the worst job MS ever did in releasing a operating system that was NOT ready. Maybe after SP-2????

Vista is running great on my machine. Using AMD CPU, ASUS board and ATI Graphics card, no issues what so ever. I'm an IT Professional, so I use it for my profession but also for gaming. FS X, Test Drive Unlimited, GTR, GTR2, NFS MW and Carbon. Performance is good. Also have a number of Win2003 servers and my PC's are in AD, together with a Vista Media PC under my TV, even this small form factor PC with only 1GB of RAM runs great. 40 seconds to boot on the small PC!

I can understand that not all apps will function, but older apps and certainly drivers can be a bit difficult. This however is not the problem of MS or the supplier.

If you keep the correct generations together all should be running fine.
Running a 3 year old PC with a 3year old OS and 3 year old apps/games will work fine for years and years to come. When you want to mix, then you'll have problems. This is something i find normal!

You cant connect a HD-DVD player on a 15 year old TV neighter, it does not have the connection. You have to be carefull when fueling a 20 year old car as the octane level in the fuel could be wrong.

As the IT field advances mutch faster then classic technologies (engines, mechanics etc) it is normal that they age faster... This is a pitty and can be expencive, but nobody NEEDS Vista. It is a new product made for a new generation of hardware.

If you don't like Vista, dont use it ... no point in pointing fingers, everything can be made better and this is also the case for things I made ... and probably for things you made as well ...

vista works fine. i have completly abandoned xp for the desktop. I am also excited about the sp1.

Yeah there are some small bugs, so what. All of my hardware functions, all of my software functions, (some updates along the way) so what's the problem?

I can edit photos on the fly, record my own music, convert files to divx, do my productivity stuff, use all of my old emulators to play all of the classic games.

I think that the people not willing to install vista fall into one of the following...

1. afraid of change
2. not interested in using their computers for multimedia
3. not interested in simplicity
4. listening to their brother-in-law who knows a little something about computers
5. do not have the hardware to support the o/s
6. sadly just following the crowd, when they could be enjoying themselves today.

A bunch of pretty flipping windows does not make it better as a multimedia machine. When I do build a new machine, I will keep XP because why waste all the new power JUST to run an OS that does NOTHING new except LOOK pretty. Name something that you can do on your machine that can't be done on XP. Vista is just there so MS can have a product to sell, not because it is any better yet.

I had WindowsME on a screaming fast P4 1.3GhZ Sony Vaio. Stop laughing. I edited professional video on that box for 2 years. ( Try to do serious video editing without NTFS ). Kidding aside that system, once the start up routine was tweaked and trimmed, was an excellent little PC (RDRAM Rocked). It gave me no reason to upgrade to the wonderful world of XP until Adobe software abandoned 9x OSs. XP SP 01 was already out, can't remember if XP SP 2 was or not.

People will upgrade when Vista offers a lot more than XP, That may not happen before the next major Windows release, let alone service packs.

I have had an oem copy of Vista Home Premium(?) for about 4-5 months. I won't install it until I do a MoBo, Ram, & gpu upgrade when I have enough scratch in tech fund.

I'm really tired of hearing all these complaints about Vista not working with older hardware & applications. First off, Microsoft WARNS you that it requires recent hardware & updated applications. Second, although there is an upgrade version available, you really shouldn't try it, if you're not savvy enough to fix the issues yourself. This has been the case with previous versions of Windows as well, it's not unique to Vista. Third, the applications and driver issues mentioned here are not Microsoft's fault! Start hammering your hardware vendor for updated drivers, and if nothing else, point the finger at yourself. You should have done your homework, and verified that there was built-in or vendor provided drivers before you made the leap to Vista. Vista provides an improved user experience over XP, on recent hardware. Of course Vista could be better, EVERY OS could be better. I'm running Vista on 4 machines, and another 6 we're testing at work that so far have performed flawlessly..

Vista has been great on two machines. I am happy with UAC because it means my non-technical family members don't accidentally (or intentionally) install malware. When your kids try to install KaZaa behind your back, they can't. Granted, I implemented all this on my own with XP permissions, but families with no technical professionals are stuck running as admin and getting malware.

The only problem I have had is HP, who refuses to make a Vista driver for the Photosmart 7350. Instead, they take this opportunity to force an upgrade. It is their responsibility to update drivers, and their refusal just shows me their greed and lack of customer service. I'll just buy someone else's printers.

I have a copy of Vista Ultimate I won, and I won't use it till SP2 comes out. I've been working in the industry since 1985 and I'm very aware of MS history of software product issues on new releases going back to DOS 2.0. If your smart you'd never ever buy a 1st release MS software item.
