AMD has always been good at optimizing its technology.. But they really need to take those workers and get the K10 optimized at 3.2GHz.

This is kinda sad if you think of it. AMD is now forced to do what Intel did before the C2D. Raise the clock speed. Only Intel increased the cache which does help a bit more than just a pure clock speed raise.

Why is it that AMD still has nothing on Barcelona? Intel has already published Penryn specs and in house benchmarks usuing third party benchmarking software and when it was still in Alpha testing and yet AMD has nothing.

It just really makes me think AMD is scared to release the info cuz its not powerful enough. Plus with the arrival of Nahlem next year and AMD in debt up to their eyeballs. Which needs to be payed off by 2010 like 2.2 years away.

So is AMD going to deliver or will they just play with our minds some more? We will see. But I hope its competitve enough to make Intel drop the prices of Penryn so I can induldge in SSE4 and DX10 the way it was meant to be.

The point of these cuts are to begin creating price sockets in their line-up for Barcelona based quad-cores. I thought it was obvious, but there are still many that can't think or ignorant to how the market works. They will be releasing Quad Core Barcelona based CPU's by the end of the month. Just because AMD is not showing off benchmarks doesn't neccessarily mean it will underperform. AMD has always been tight lipped about their new products, but when delivered usually surpasses expectations(minus R600 since ati worked on that and the merge complicated release dates and such).

So long as AMD maintains their image as the better price/watt performer, that wont change any time soon.
Even as Intel moves their server base proc's to 45nm, their is still a chance that Barcelona will beat it in performance per watt.

They will do something similar in another month for their desktop based procs, with the dual intent of depleting inventory and creating price slots for their Agena based CPU's.

When we consider server CPUs, we need to take the whole system's life span into account.

Companies purchase a server to serve for some designated service period. When there is a need to replace the faulty parts, they need the identical or same architecture parts.

So, AMD is required to support this. And from the past o AMD, they will try to optimize their production process till the very end. That's not bad.

Also, by the fact of dropped power envelope, this is not over clocking but an advance in design and production which may benefit their K10 (K8L) processors.

AMD has to support their current architecture for years to come as part of their stable platform offering. This is a step in that venue and completely unrelated to their newer platform.

First off, this isn't open for debate, as of early 2008 microsoft is no long producing or supporting ANY 32bit software. This includes Windows xp, and kind of 32bit software at all.

As it stands now, Longhorn (the new-ish windows server OS) is exsclusivly 64bit. Aside from the fact that any intel CPU has pathetic 64 performance compared to its 32bit performance, the itanium chips can't actually run the majority of the server software in longhorn. the biggy being SQL server, and exchange..ya know the standard server software. They can't even run it in 64bit server 2003.

This can't be verified as of yet, though a tech site is currently doing it's own study. But it's rumored, quite reliably that HP recently did a comparison of power consumption and heat output between the top of the line intel server chips, and the current, somewhat older AMD server chips. The purpose was to find out how much your electric bill would cost from running airconditioning to keep your server farm suitably cool.

On the whole, the AMD servers were found to consume 40% less power and put out 40-50% less heat while maintaining equal or greater performance to the newer intel servers. HP was strongly advised by intel not to release these findings...what a shock. Luckily as i said before, an independant party that intel can not lean on caught wind of this and is preforming his own study.

AMD is putting out these OCed chips merely because they want to generate revenue, they want to stay in the headlines as having increased clock speeds while maintaining the same power consumption and i say again...they know intel is doing what it's always done.

Intel is basking in the limelight of it's trumped up success, and churning out as many new models as it can before anyone catches on to the fact that all this stuff is going to be a pretty sad contender after new years.

I currently run my 185 at 250mhz by a 12x multiplier. I wish it would run at 13x so I could have a full 3.2ghz too. Well I've reached the end of the road with this socket type. I can't wait until the Phenom X4's hit the market.

Regarding AMD being power efficient and save 40% power.... maybe if you keep those servers on standby mode. THG's exclusive hardware reviews proves that Intel is much energy efficient when full load is running. That's what you need in a server/workstation... in my workplace there are number of servers running 24x7x365. And they are under heavy load all the time. So they will save more energy if they are armed with intel, not with AMD...

Lower power consumption, better performance and lower shelf prices. People are very eager to run AMD does, without taking into account the price/performance the K8 architecture offers. Look at the Hyper-Transport links and how well they scale..it's not just MIPS and MFlops that count in the server sector.

James, do you realise that Intel owns 80% of the desktop CPU market? Despite this, it took 'everything' Intel had to overtake technology that had held the reigns for 4 years..AMD technology. The C2D is a generation ahead of the A64 and still the A64 can hold it's ground. Without AMD you would not see a C2D..people seem very eager to forget this.

You was claiming over clocking is bad and would harm your CPU. But when I pointed out the facts you high tailed it on me.

You claim to be a system builder, but then state that. Well I guess technically putting a PC together is like putting together a model. You basically connect the dots and hit the on switch. you really can get by being a clueless system builder and the average customer would never know.

$873 for dual Opteron which runs twice slower then quad core X5355 for $744 is kind of joke ;o) probably it’s intended to make the point that AMD perceives their product as a competitive product, thus the customer who sees the price as an indicator of performance may “buy it” literally. Even generally the price is an indicator of performance it may not reflect the performance adequately if the price-war is going on and AMD has no option to cut prices anymore while Intel can. I have used Opteron WS in P4 era as clear performer winner but today AMD has no competitive CPU and it seems getting worse since “true quad-core“ Barcelona apparently is not fast enough to compete with “fake quad-core” Intel CPUs.

Where have you been lately?
1) 45nm is ahead of schedule product and will be on the market less than 2 years after 65nm (~Jan'06)
2) Nehalem is starting to sample at OEM's and is on schedule for H2'08
3) Discrete graphics chip work is under development
4) Turbo memory (though not quite yet ready for primetime)
5) They've increased FSB from 1066 to 1333
6) They're making quad core chips in a similar power envelop as the initial DUAL core chips
7) Wi-Max development is at a minimmum on schedule
8) SSE4
9) Added instructions in Penryn (8-10% clock for clock is not a typical dumb shrink between tech nodes)

So you're take is that they are resting in the 12months since the introduction of a major CPU architecture - what exactly are your expectations?

I for one have been reading up on both Barcelona and Penryn(45nm). Although there is very little detail on Barcelona to relly know if its good or crap.

The Penryn may not have much of a clock boost to it but it doesn't need much of a boost in clock speed really. They increased the cache, used their new high k metal gates and shrunk it. It is showing anywhere from a 22%-44% boost in performance over a C2QX6800 and 111% boost in DivX encoding.

Now thats something to be amazed at. Also Intel have shrunk the processor from 90nm to 45nm in what 2-3 years? And next year will be 32nm, which will lower power consumption and increase performance again.

So far we have what Intel plans on doing, but AMD is coming up short. ALso Intel never rests. They are always working on something new to benefit the PC community. Hell WiMax is going to be awesome. And you can also thank Intel for pushing SATA, which after the 3rd generation will probably blow SCSI away in price/performance.

You say Barcelona is not as fast as Intel Core 2 Quad. Barcelona isn't even out yet. Also take into account, the effect latency has on high-bandwidth usage and multiple CPU's. In this respect Intel does not have a clear lead primarily due to the fact that it has no true quad-core CPU or any CPU with onboard MMU..

Clock speed is going to be less important..look where it got Intel and the P4: it got them everywhere in marketing yet only made a difference in multimedia encoding. The better software can take advantage of cache and onboard memory controllers, the less raw MHz is going to matter. Complex software will require bandwidth not just MHz.
