Pretty sure this isn't the first water cooled HDD device. Koolance has had a HDD water cooling solution for quite some time.

Koolance has already had cooling packs for hard drives for the last few years -- both single and dual drive configurations. They're not self-contained systems like the one above but I wouldn't exactly call NEC/Hitachi the first ones to roll out a water-cooling product for hard drives.

Since when do hard disks get hot enough to need water cooling? I guess if you want a completely fanless setup (other than the radiator fans presumably) then this would be ok. Now if you could overclock a hard drive to run at higher RPM, then this would be useful.

how about the manufacturers make the hdd more efficient by having higher densities on fewer platters. that equals to less power consumption and heat. therefore this product is pointless. even now hdd don't need to be cooled, especially water-cooled. NEC and Hitachi, please get your heads out of your asses.

They appear to claim it is the first watercooling "system" for a hard drive. Koolance, Danger Den, etc., make standalone waterblocks that need to be integrated with some other system. The device in the picture has another waterblock on it, probably for a CPU. So NEC/Hitachi is perfectly correct, in the weaselese of marketing.

But why does it only cool one hard drive? I would think that anyone concerned enough about hard drive temperatures to buy this---system admins for massive mission-critical RAID setups, perhaps---is going to have several drives that need cooling. As gm0n3y notes, hard drives aren't THAT hot; NEC/Hitachi's system could surely handle multiple drives without difficulty.

Why not a cooling system that can be used for all three; cpu, gpu and hd. Instead of having three systems hogging space and energy, have one device that cools all three.

A cooling device that cools all three devices - cpu gpu hdd - would use less energy and be less in volume if one had a cooling system for each of the three devices; cpu, gpu and hdd.

I can see many possible problems coming already...

Wtf is going on here? Sorry to break it down, but forum Do It Yourself'ers have LONG made liquid cooled blocks for HDs, PSUs, CPUs, GPU's and anything else WAAAAAAAAAAAY before any of these newb cooling-kit pawns even applied for LLC business license. Just check Pro-Cooling forums and what not back 5yrs ago!

I'm so sick of these types of PR stunts and so-called cooling businesses like Sw|ftec|-| poaching on public/private forums (see pro-cooling.com) and blatantly STEALING ideas and repackaging them. There's one guy in particular B|ll 4dams. Pure Thief! Guy would start up a furious post about someone's new idea, dissing it, point out all kinds of supposed flaws, then suddenly GUESSS who's working for Sw|ft3ch now? Guess what "new" idea/block hits the market? The same shit he pissed and moaned about. Guy is a sellout, and an idea thief, along with his employer and many of these other so-called cooling "specialist!" They scour our forums and steal ideas, then repackage and pawn them off as their own. Fsck all of you...B|LL.
