Santa Clara (CA) – Intel’s not-so-secret price cut has been officially announced.  The company slashed prices of its entry-level quad-core processors by 50% and also released six new processors in the Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo lines.

The new pricing for 1000 unit purchases took effect on July 22.  The most dramatic cut was done to the Q6600 quad-core processor (2.40 GHz 1066 MHz FSB) which dropped to $266 – a tremendous drop considering the CPU was selling for $530 just one month ago.

The four new processors in the Core 2 Duo line are all 1333 MHz FSB parts and are the E6850 (3.00 GHz), E6750 (2.66 GHz), E6550 (2.33 GHz) and E6540 (2.33 GHz).  They cost $266, $183, $163 and $163 respectively.  Basically the only difference between the E6550 and the 6540 is that the 6550 has Intel’s “Trusted Execution Technology” which was formerly known as LaGrande Technology.

Eagle-eyed readers will see that the quad-core Q6600 is now the same price as a dual-core E6850.  At that pricing, computer geeks who need extra power for video rendering or multi-threaded applications probably will buy the Q6600 without batting an eye.  Gamers and other users who don’t need a quad-core would be better served with the faster front-side bus of the E6850 and other new processors.

Intel also launched two new quad-core processors, the 2.66 GHz Q6700 with a 1066 MHz FSB for $530 and the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 running at 3.00 GHz and 1333 MHz FSB.  Like other Core 2 Extreme processors, the QX6850 sells for $999.

Some online stores, like Newegg, have already slashed their prices on Intel quad-core processors.  Up until Friday, the e-tailer was selling the Core 2 Quad Q6600 for $399, but dropped the price to $299 over the weekend.  Curiously, the price has risen to $320 as of 11:00 AM PST today.

...driven by supply and demand. Retailers charge the highest price people are willing to pay. As available supply decreases, the item becomes more valuable and they can charge more money. They are not out to do you a favor by charging less than they can, they are there to make money.

Picked up a 6850

Picked up a 6850 along with a new mobo with P35 and some new ram. Can't wait to get it, gunna be a nice upgrade from my old s939 4200 X2. Newegg is smart, they raise the price when they are low on stock because they know it's gunna sell and they prolly wanna keep it in stock a lil longer to stretch it out till they get a new shipment. Either way, I have bought a ton of stuff through them and have always had excellent dealings with their customer service. So, even if they aren't the lowest price I stick with em, provided the price isn't absurd. If you don't like their prices then shop elsewhere, no one is forcing you to buy from them and there are a ton of other etailers out there.

I bet you newegg has algorithms in place to adjust the cost of item, depending on demand and stock. Thus, even if they have plenty of stock they will increase the price based on how many orders they recently received or even page views.... Who knows, but I very much dislike this type of pricing strategy. It only shows me the merchant is ruthless in their pricing and would charge more if they could. I like companies like costco that has a ceiling on profit margin. To bad they don't sell computer parts.

Yes it sucks that the price is not as low as it should be, but keep in mind they are a company with the sole purpose of making a profit. They can only charge what people are willing to pay. If you find it too expensive, feel free to shop else where. This is economics 101. Yes costco has a cap on their profits, but I find that stupid. If I invested in costco, I would be a pissed off shareholder knowing that I COULD be making more money. Obviously, as a consumer I want the lowest price. Hence my lack of loyalty to any one particular store.

"Fairness" has nothing to do with it. Newegg is using simple macroeconomic principles that have already been mentioned by others. Usually, products are priced below MSRP to make you feel like you're getting a "good deal." Occasionally, the market demands that products sell above MSRP. Those of you foolish enough to have purchased a PS3 off eBay at an inflated price are familiar with this phenomenon. Those of you who tried to sell them (iPhones included) were trying to CAPTIALIZE on the same concept.

Sompe comuter parts may be commodities (think memory modules), but CPU's are not by definition. Commodity and need are irrelevant, for example corn is a commodity, as are virtually all foods at their raw form.

I never said it was unfair, I said they suck. They can charge what ever they want, I wouldn't purchase it from the. I do vote with my dollar and I also voice my opinion like everyone else should. It's a sign of a third rate company that doesn't remain on the up and up with its customers. Which is why walmart has been growing leaps and bounds and even in small margins has made a killing. And a company like newegg has remained 2nd rate at best and customer base will not check newegg first. They will instead use pricegrabber.com or cnet.com. Outside of the HD-DVD drive and a few selections of bargain discounted hard drives, new egg hasn't been the choice for my dollar in quite some time. And it will remain that way.

As of 9:30PM EST the Q6600 is up to $375 on Newegg. I had one in my cart yesterday at $299. It wasn't the cheapest, but I trusted newegg so I was going to buy it from them anyway. Then when I went to buy it the processor disappeared from my order. I went back to it and the price had gone up. I am done with newegg, they have been steadily declining for the last 3 years.

Newegg has always treated me great. In fact I kindof like that they make a few extra bucks off off the impatient people while I will wait a few days and make out fine. Capitalism is a carefully constructed system that RELIES on government enforcement of property ownership rights. The whole system is carefully maintained by government, credit agencies, employment practice and , yes, the prevailing sense of right and wrong. Example: Native americans have a hard time getting a loan for a structure that will be built on a reservation. But they can get a loan on a mobile home just fine. Why? Because their land is controlled under a different set of laws, if the load is not repaid the structure CAN NOT be repossessed because it is tribal land. They can't release the capital in their land because it cannot be taken under non-payment. A mobile home, though, can be hooked up and dragged away. All this shows a lot of people were waiting for the intel price cuts to get their hands on a quad core processor... so much for amd's campaing agianst the not-true-quad-core... Intel's Quad core sales since their release has been more than a million units till now.. and with this I think they will sell many more millions in the next few (5-6?) months before the phenom desktop version comes and saturate the demand.. AMD will be forced to sell the phenom at similar price if we consider the recent barcy clocking issues, and I am not sure how AMD will recover enough money to develop the next processor... Looks like Intel has really pushed AMD into a tight corner..

I use AMD as my cpu of choice. It supports competiton and keeps Intel on their toes. They are other cpu makers out there doing the same thing. If Intel was the only cpu maker, they would be like Microsoft and not really care about quality but about how much they can charge to customers.

newegg and costco are not similar retailer. costco is a membership only retailer which is why they have a cap on profits. newegg is a freemarket retailer. costco has shareholders, BUT also members that PAY to save money. so dont invest in costco if it bothers you that they dont chase the maximum mark-up possible.
