El Segundo (CA) - Even though AMD lost a lot of money last quarter, it managed to keep Intel from cutting deeper into its market share.

Research firm iSuppli estimates that during the second quarter of 2007, AMD accounted for around 11.4% of worldwide microprocessor sales. That's an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the first quarter, and puts an end to a reign of falling market share for AMD.

It's not exactly a huge victory for AMD. The company posted a loss of $600 million during the quarter. For a microprocessor manufacturer that's had a handful of hardships, though, the results weren't devastating either.

"The second quarter essentially maintained the status quo of the first quarter, with no significant trade in market-share position between the two main microprocessor supplier," said iSuppli principal analyst Matthew Wilkins.

0.5% increase?

For a company that reported a 38% unit shipment increase, that seems like a remarkably low revenue share gain. I can't believe that the overall market grew that much, AMD must have seriously had a lower ASP in Q2.

Its a joke that their unit shipments went up 38% for a .5% rise in share. This clearly means that they are actually distributing processors for a very very low ASP, if not giving dell free chips just to shore up numbers, and not get stuck with inventory. You can also say that they gave away 37.5% worth of chips free this time. Would be a miracle if they survived. Anyways, they have junk chips now.

AMD seems not to do too well right now

Not only are the AMD current lineup terrible compared to Intel's the recent ATI graphic card line-up isn't quite measuring up to nvidida's either. That is two blows to the ailing company. Other problems, Phenom doesn't look very promising as of right now. Diversified focus due to two branches of the company... It will take AMD a while to recover, not to mention catch up.... I certainly hope AMD succeeds do.... but it looks bleak for AMD right now.
