As usual, the news media gets it completely wrong. An Armored Personnel Carrier DOES NOT equal a Tank. They are completely different "animals" so to speak.

Did you click the link and look at the picture? While I agree with you that APC!=Tank, that APC is more than I was thinking when I read the blurb, it has a top mounted weapon turret and tank treads, more tankish than a hummer.

It's an armored personel carrier, or APC. A tank weighs 65 tons = 130,000 lbs. An APC probably weighs less than 20,000 lbs, and can't take a very powerful hit, relying more on speed.

Sounds like a new missions in the next GTA game.

Is an APC not good enough for you? Hell, I'd take one in a heartbeat over the POS I drive now. Gas mileage probably sucks, but the get-the-hell-out-of-my-way-or-I'll-run-over-your-car effect would make the morning commute so much easier.

Andrew, a tank is a little harder to deal with than an APC. It's like comparing a rampaging VW Beetle to a rampaging Hummer H1. It might have been more difficult to pull him from a tank, especially if he doesn't stop moving and plows anything that gets near him.

I think I can speak for a lot of folks in saying I'm simultaneously appalled and thrilled thinking about a pissed off "civilian" with a tank going after the man. The strange chord of solidarity we feel stems from the fact that we all feel powerless against the establishment at times. The more reasoned stroke of fear is from the simple prospect of having some yahoo with a freaking tank(APC my Crack) tooling around our streets with a grudge against whomever pissed him off that day. Could have been his elementary school teacher that embarrassed him in phys-ed class. That's pretty scary.

If you see your neighbor putting the finishing touches on his restored tank in his back yard, Hows about a call to the local police or army base.

Armored personnel carriers ARE tanks, not sure what you're thinking...that's what they call them here in the US I believe, as I was @ Indian Town Gap several years ago and saw a TANK that was designed to carry troops. It was pretty wicked, with 4" thick steel walls and an engine that could burn anything from motor oil to diesel or gas or alcohol. Note that these things are ARMORED, meaning carrying arms and wearing armor...just like a...TANK! :-) Go to google images and type in APC. Sure look like TANKS to me.

The name Tank comes from an intelligence cover up for the first tracked armored fighting vehicles during WWI. It is also applied to SA wheeled heavy armored vehicles, but the terms implies armored, tracked, fighting vehicle.

As such, an APC would not be a tank, as it is a support vehicle. If you use a tank chassis to create a heavy crane, it is no longer a tank.

There are also many differences between tanks and APCs, as previous people have pointed out (weight, armor thickness & slope , visibility, systems...). They may look similar to you, but are different things.

as for guns in most countrys,you are allowed to buy old tanks! it is however prohibited to drive them on the street(just like carrying a gun!) you can however drive on your own terrain!

if it was a tank or not: no, an apc is not a tank! an apc is used to transport soldiers around and to protect them against riflefire! an to support it with its main gun. if an apc gets hit by something bigger than a bullet, its history! a tank can withstand more attacks,but cannot carry troops! in fact they normaly look different!

An APC is a carrier of personnel, or in other words an armoured (sometimes tracked) truck. A tank is a weapon with a heavy gun which is only manned with the personnel to move it from A to B or work the gun. Tanks are always tracked. Now adays there are hybrid vehicles which are both but you can't get them (as yet) on the civilian market. To the yank who said that he has always called APC's Tanks, well you've been changing the English langauge for years, why stop now. Get an education.
