Tokyo (Japan) – Rev up those mobile phones because Japan’s NTT DoCoMo is testing out “Super G” cellular service in Tokyo that can hit up to 300 Mbps speeds.  The new service should be available in 2009 and will be approximately 100 times faster than the current 3G network.

NTT DoCoMo is dubbing this new network Super G or 3.9G and predicts that it will give a “smooth transition” to 4G in the future.  Tests will initially be quite modest and will be confined to single base station and phone pairings, but will eventually graduate to multiple base stations doing hand offs.  Eventually both the stations and client side units will use four MIMO antennas each to speed data along at up to 80 Mbps upload and 300 Mbps download.

Super G uses several frequency bands including 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 MHz while regular 3G in Japan uses just the 5 MHz band.  Regular 3G is also much slower at 384 Kbps up and downlink.  Some parts of Japan currently have 3.5G service which tops out at 5.7 Mbps uplink and 14 Mbps downlink.

Do you really need 300Mbps to your phone? I think the best use for this would be if you could plug your phone into your PC via USB and use that for your ISP. Don't know if that's possible or economically feasible, but it would be HUGE for all those people that live outside of the cities with broadband, in my opinion. At any rate, I thought my 5Mbps cable internet was fast. 300Mbps?!?

I can't comprehend how wireless bandwidth could actually provide faster speed than wired? I'm betting this is the bandwidth PER TRANSMITTER, but if you've got 20 people nearby using it, it would be split among them? Still, that seems like ludicrous speed, and really shows how far behind we are in NA. to those who don't see a need on a cellphone, what about live television/movies streamed wirelessly to you anywhere you want? sounds pretty cool for commuters. One step closer to eliminating the current monopoly of television distribution companies, and moving onto media broadcast over the internet.

I lived in South East Asia. People DO just connect the cell phone to the PC and don't bother getting DSL/Cable. From the rice village to the big cities. Cheaper and 24/7 to! The States is so far behind, hurts to think about it.

You need higher speed on a mobile. By the very nature of the fact that you are using your cell phone it means you are out and about and need instant access. Lets say you are driving in traffic and need to pull a map on the internet. you cant keep looking at the phone to see if it came up. if it does not come up quick enough you miss the turn, etc. Maybe driving is not that most resposible example; it just came to mind. What I know from experience. If I am using a phone application and I have to wait I give up on it. On my desktop I will open another browser window and come back later when the download is complete.
