Fremont (CA) – Logitech today announced its MX Air mouse, a stylish new mouse that has the shape of a common mouse, but works “in air” as well and is used just like a remote control.

The MX Air is an interesting new concept that includes some of the features of previously available 3D finger mice as well as the ease of use of a common remote control for a TV or music system. According to the manufacturer the device works on the desk as well as in the air and allows users an intuitive way to manage and playback multimedia content such as videos, music or image slideshows.

Aside from its unique look that consists of a polished-black, semi-transparent top case and a silver base as well as back-lighted, partially touch-sensitive buttons, the MX Air integrates MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) sensors to recognize physical movements in air that are translated into on-screen movements and actions. Among the more sophisticated features, for example is the way how the volume of music can be changed: Users simply hold the dedicated volume button on the mouse and move the mouse either to the right for increased volume or to the left to turn the volume down.

Instead of a scroll wheel, the MX Air has a touchpad surface that works similar to the touchscreen used in Apple’s iPhone to scroll through content: Users simply swipe (”flick”) over the surface – the speed of the swipe determines the speed of the scroll.

The MX Air uses a 2.4 GHz RF wireless technology with a reach of up to 30 ft and includes a rechargeable battery.

Logitech will begin selling the mouse in the U.S. and Europe in August for a suggested retail price of $150.
