seeing as the current generation is $170 for a $100 laptop it is highly impressive that they'll be able to cut this by 70%. this leaves me to wonder how they propose to do this...I mean cheaper battery/lcd what...certainly mass production can't lower the price that much w/e the case this would be interesting if they kept the specs the same for one and half more years and relative to the rest of world they would have a very slow laptop.

I think the whole "One Laptop per Child" thing is pointless.

There are millions of children in neady contries whoese schools have no playgrounds, old chairs that are falling appart, windows that are broken so the wind comes in and destroys the little that they have, and children who live less then seven miles from the ocean but have never seen it.

We need to help them take care of their basic needs before we worry about computers in needy countries. I think they would be better off without it.

Plus, studies in the US and other nations have shown that the introduction of laptops/computers does not actually help children learn. The best method is well trained, well educated Teachers who want to make a difference.

As technology increased, prices usually come down. What they used to pay for computers years ago usually was higher than what they pay today and todays technology is way more advance than it was then. I have no doubt that the OLPC will come down in price.

It would be neat if future OLPC's used an OLED screen or eInk screen and a solid state drive running ReactOS (open source clone of WinNT). http://www.reactos.org :)

Teachers could use the OLPC as a tool to help students learn. It could hold the ebook versions of text books which would make it easier to distribute to more people without having to pay for the printed version. It could go online to educational sites so the student could also learn from there. The user could go to other health related sites to learn how to prevent illness and live a healthier life (not just the student but also the whole family). They could about the world around them; beyond their own country or even their own continent or island. It has much potential.
