Tack one up for HD-DVD. It shows that it is cheaper than Blu Ray and how Blu Ray is going to have trouble completing with HD.

Independent filmmakers will be going down with HD-DVD that's nice.

Folks who love the Blu-Ray format really don't see the problems that this ill-designed Sony format will bring. Physically the discs are designed for short life and failures. Sony touted putting a "special protective layer" on Blu-Ray but to date has yet to do so due to costs. Blu-Ray is just expensive, no matter how you look at it. HD-DVD provides identical movie format for 1/2 the costs and is usually a better experience for consumers. HD-DVD players are sub $300 now, and will be sub $200 by Christmas this year. Blu-Ray's so-called advantage of numbers is wrong too, as HD-DVD stand alone players outsell Blu-Ray stand alone players 70 to 30. Once the PS3 dies, which it is on it's way to doing, then HD-DVD's cheaper and more easier to use players will dominate. Blockbuster was early in it's statements (probably pushed by Sony) And, don't buy the Sony Blu-Ray capacity B.S. Blu-Ray holds up to 9 hours HD content, HD-DVD holds 8. Is that really a lot more? Not really. For SD content, HD-DVD actually holds more. So the storage lie is not very convincing once you know the facts. Sony is no longer the company it used to be. HD-DVD was slower in development, and lost out on studio support in the beginning. Expect studios to start to support HD-DVD in higher number very soon.

Having Indie film support a format is not a means to a victory. These are films that only a small minority of the population typically watch. Sure there are one or two superstars but by and large, they accomdate small portions of the population. HD DVD needs to start negotiating with the larger players to truly claim definitive victory.

As for sales figures, I believe Blu-Ray films are outselling HD films by a 64-36 ratio for the last 2-3 months.

Microsoft needs to drop the HD DVD act. They are only "helping the indie kids" to harm Blu Ray, IE: hurt Sony.

Keeping the fledgling HD DVD format alive in any way now only hurts the consumer and companies trying to decide which is the best way to go. Just give up already- Blu Ray has won.

It looks like the HD-DVD camp is getting desperate to add more content to its format. It looks like we are seeing the death-throws of HD-DVD which is good. Blu-Ray is a far superior format for the consumer (higher capacity, better scratch resistance, BDJ support, etc.). HD-DVD on the other hand is only beneficial to manufacturers because it still uses the old DVD disc creation process and short changes consumers (more prone to scratch errors, lower capacity, susceptible to same issues that plague some DVD’s). And from what I have seen in the end the consumer is paying about the same retail price for HD movies regardless of format.

"lower capacity" - Do full movies not fit on an HD DVD disc? Ah, they do. Then why should anyone but the most demanding PC storage aficionado care?

You know as the Blu-ray/HD battle heats up, I think it'll come down to the porn industry as the deciding vote in all this.. just think, back when it was BETA vs. VHS, if the porn industry didnt go VHS, we'd all would have been using BETA

All this nonsense comes from CNET running an article months back about how porn MIGHT decide the HD wars.
The fact is, I invested good morning in my HD system, and I want to watch blockbuster movies on my system. Recent blockbuster movies at that. At the moment Blu Ray is consistently delivering these more than HD. I don't want any artsy-fartsy indie films with college movie makers faffing about thinking they are the next Coppola - unless somebody is gonna give them to me for free, and then I might use them as coasters.
The HD-DVD crowd can watch these all they like, I'm voting with my feet so may the best format win.
