Amazon.com and Microsoft said that the two companies will provide authoring and support services for indie filmmakers to make movies available on HD DVD.

According to the companies, “up to 1000” indie films will be included in the project with titles planned to be made available through the manufacturing-on-demand technology of Amazon’s subsidiary CustomFlix. The program is designed to “lower the barriers to entry for filmmakers to produce and distribute movies in the HD DVD format.”

The transition to both high-definition formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray, has often been criticized to be tied to substantial investment requirements, which in some cases are out of reach for independent film makers.
