Sunnyvale (CA) – AMD today said that it will be shipping standard and low-power versions of its quad-core server and workstation processor in August, with the product introduction being scheduled for September.

The announcement comes just one day after a report by the Inquirer that claimed that AMD will debut the processor on September 11. AMD remained unclear about the exact introduction date, but confirmed that it will begin shipping Barcelona CPUs “for revenue” in August. Servers and workstations with the new chip will be available in September, AMD said.

In contrast to the report published yesterday, AMD said that it will be shipping both standard (95 watt) as well as low-power versions (65 watt) versions of the processor in August. Clock speeds will be as high as 2.0 GHz, according to the company, with “Special Edition” (120 watt) SE processors arriving in Q4. Sources told the Inquirer that these CPUs will be available with 2.4 and 2.5 GHz.

AMD said that the new processors can provide a performance increase up to 70% on “certain database applications” and up to 40% on “certain floating point applications.” Upcoming higher frequency processors are expected “to significantly add to this performance advantage,” the company said.

...looking at the rumored release date, I can only assume the number of really bad "disaster" or "bomb" jokes in relation to the launch. That aside, I think the real launch is with the SE chips, not the 2.0 GHz starter quads.

The problem is that rumors run crazy in the tech world, and the E6600 Core2Duo isn't really a better buy than an X2 5600. You get what, 3 FPS better in a couple of games and pay a bit more and suddenly it's "better?" I would have to say that probably more people don't OC than do, and AMD pretty much MATCHED Intel, which is 10X their size in the latest CPU offerings. Intel ripped off several of their technologies to make Core2Duo as well, so I don't really see how "Something is wrong with AMD." They're integrating like every other company has been doing lately to stay afloat in the market. Buy another company that makes a related tech that we can't produce and expand into new markets. It's a smart move, it's just that not enough people are buying their chips because everyone thinks the Core2Duo's are so much better when they're really not all that much better.

I must agree with JohnDoe....AMD since K5 started to make really good CPUs....but Intel´s unfair tactics almost blocked sales of AMD´s CPUs when they were leaders....and last year came Core2 Duo.....that finally overcame K8...but without OC it is really only by percents....but Intel´s PR is very strong....coupled with those OC guys....that´s why Core2 Duo has so high sales....Dell started to sell AMD based systems in 2006 and Toshiba will in 2007....does it make sense? Why so late? These are Intel´s rules....
