New York (NY) - The latest prediction from the Consumer Electronics Association is that 16 million HDTVs will be sold this year, increasing the total number of sets to over 50 million.

According to CEA, 36.5 million high definition TVs are already in US homes, accounting for about 30% of nationwide households.  The trade group expects that number to rise to 52.5 million, or 36%, by 2008.

CEA has reported in previous surveys that the majority of HDTV owners are pleased with their set, but many of them are still confused about the differences between actual HD content and content that's upconverted from a standard definition source.

The newest CEA report also showed that 66% of people who receive over-the-air HD content get it through a cable operator, 27% via satellite, and 8% from an HD antenna.

CEA also found that 30% of HDTV owners own more than one HDTV, and around 5% receive HD content from both cable and satellite.

well it's limited to U.S.... i'm canadian lol... seriously, i will probably buy a gonzo computer monitor instead of an HDTV monitor... higher resolution, smaller screen and shorter distance to screen. 30" will be enough for me...

If you don't mind playing at 1360x768, a 37" or 42" HDTV is a nice monitor. For a bit more you can get a 42" or 47" @ 1920x1080. You'll definitely need wireless kbd mouse though... :)

HDTV

I bought an HDTV at X-mas, a 50-inch DLP. I love it. High Def really is that much better if you ask me. 24 was my favorite thing to watch in HD. And of course sports look amazing. I bought it mostly for my 360. They are still too expensive to really be a mainstream product though.

besides wireless kbd/mouse (seems like an obvious choice regardless), good ac will be needed during summer (so spare also some change for electricity bill for your big tv/ac combo). myself i'm looking to downsize mine 27" to a high-res monitor

1080p maybe the newest HD standard everybody is after, but there is more on the way. Mitsubishi have just began offering their latest panel, the 56P-QF60LCU. This 56 inch LCD can spit out a jaw-dropping 3840 x 2160 pixels, or FQHD. It does this by displaying four 1080p images simultaneously via 4 DVI inputs. HTPC users that have the correct SLI video cards with four outputs will be able to connect this display and enjoy full quality HD video. I was lucky to see this on display at InfoComm recently and I can tell you, it makes 1080p look like SDTV.

Wait for the Quad HD (Full High Definition) sets to come out. They won't cost much more than current HDTV sets and will have double the resolution and double the pixels. 3840 x 2160 is what most hd movies are shot in now.

Why Wait?

One will never enjoy HDTV if he waits for new technology. There is always new technology "just around the corner". The fact is, the content will be created for the lowest common denominator. When these new Quad HD sets come out, apparently 30% of the US will have sets that "only" support 1080p and less than 1% will have Quad HD sets. 30% of the US is a lot of sets. Will Quad HD sets display 1080p content noticeably better than current HD sets? Somehow I doubt it. And I also very much doubt that my cable company will jump on the Quad HD bandwagon anytime soon.

Whats the point

Whats the point in having that resolution? I mean the best source available right now are 1080p. And that is a blue ray player. Most cables and sattelite companies in the US broadcast at 1080i still. Of course there are going to be better than 1080p tv's so the electronics industry can suck up more of your money.. But what exactly is the point in having one if nothing will take advantage of it. i dont even know of a computer that will take advantage of that resolution.

Just wait for the holodeck, it's just around the corner! Seriously though I doubt that something that displays that high of a resolutions will be barely more than a 1080p tv. Really for my use 1080p tv's still aren't at a price range that I'm even thinking of buying one. When I can get a 1080p projector (that's projector not rear projection tv) for under $700 after tax then I'll consider it. I'm sure when QHD products are available they'll be a lot more than that. And really I think the average consumer would be leary about even spending $700 on a tv.
