Scotts Valley (CA) – Following Hitachi and Samsung, Seagate now has announced 1 TB desktop hard drives as well.

The 11th generation barracuda drive, officially called 7200.11, increases the maximum capacity of its predecessor from 750 GB to 1 TB. In terms of storage density, Seagate lands in the middle of the pack, storing 1 TB on a total of four platters (250 GB per platter; 205 Gb/square inch). Hitachi needs five platters to reach 1 TB (144 Gb/square inch), while Samsung needs only three (241 Gb/square inch).

However, Seagate claims that it has the lead in performance as well as operating noise. According to the company, a data transfer speed of 105 MB/s is the fastest ever achieved on a desktop drive; the drive is promised t be virtually silent, running at 2.7 bels idle and at 2.9 bels during seek processes. Power consumption is rated at 8.0 watts when idle and 11.6 watts when active.

Seagate said that the new Barracuda 7200.11 will be shipping in 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB capacities in the third quarter of this year. The 1 TB SATA 3 Gb/s version will be priced at $400. The company will also be offering an enterprise version of the desktop drive: The Barracuda ES2 will also be available with 1 TB capacity, but offer dual-port SAS as an interface choice.

105 MB/s have to be max, if it is average the max transfer will be 130~140 which is twice as high as 7200.10

i think they ment avarage.. isn´t max called burst? and over 100mb/s as burst is not that uncommon.. Most likely in real life it is higher avarage since every hd comppany likes to give better specs that what hd really have.

max STR

considering the 1TB hitachi achieves a max STR of ~80MB/s, with only 200GB platters... i would think that the 250GB platters of the seagate 7200.11 is its max STR as well... ...the 1TB samsung however, looks to have ~333GB platters, which should put it closer to ~130-140MB/s for its max STR

MTBF

Not mentioned here, I pulled this from another site. 1.2 million hours is 137 years. Now, I understand how these tests are run and the reason they use the numbers they do, but COME ON! All BS marketing aside, NO ONE can expect these drives to last 137 years, MEAN TIME, half lasting less, half lasting more. They really need to find a better way to test drives and report longevity. Sorry, I just hate when I hear those numbers from HDD manufactures. Who do they think they are fooling? I'm done with my ranting now...

Considering you can get 1T for as less than $200, why would you pay double just to save a couple of bays? You could buy an external enclosure and save yourself $150. It's just not worth it yet, prices will have to come down. The average user doesn't need this much space anyway.

Warranty length vs. MTBF

Yeah, MTBF is almost meaningless. The warranty says more about the drive. If the MTBF really is 137 years then it should have at least a 100 year warranty. Don't tell me how long it will last based on test. Tell me how long you'll help me out when it does die. Anyway, the densities on these new TB drives are really great. But the more capacity we cram into desktop drives the harder it will be for solid-state to catch on, and that's what I really want.

Samsung is Faster...

hopefully. Like choirbass said the Samsung has higher density platters which means all things being the same the Samsung F1s should be faster than the Seagates. I just hope Samsung has a long warranty.

MTBF / bit count

You need to take the odds of MTBF occurring (once in 1.2 million hours) and divide that by the amount of bits on the drive. The 1.2 million hour MTBF is for each bit. The odds that it will occur sooner rather than later are directly related to this ratio. Seagate is *far* from saying that the drive will last for 1.2 million hours.

I defrag my 1.36Tb "Data Library" (that's 4 500GbWD's in RAID5) weekly. It wouldn't take more than an hour. Defragging is only a pain if you let the hard drive become very fragmented. That's just poor maintenance!
