I like Best Buy. :-(

GOOD....not offence to anyone that loves best however, they rip people off with anything that they sell anyways. there is a mark-up on anything in that store...and when talking about economics someone is still making a profit somewhere along the lines..
Look at retailers like Canada Computers, Tiger Direct, or Newegg..those prices for the most part are below the prices of these big box stores by anywhere for $40-60 on average and still…someone is still making a cut somewhere otherwise people would be going out of business left right and centre…so good they should be sued for being deceptive and taking advantage of their customers

Best Buy is in the business of making money so yes there are markup on products they sell and it's up to the consumer to shop around for best price, nothing new there. However, I don't agree with their deceptive practice of misleading customers about their products or services such as MSN network.

Most of the time I find their prices in the store to be reasonable in comparsion with other brick and morter retailers. I buy most of my stuff from NewEgg anyway but there are times I do like driving down to Best Buy and get the products on the same day even it a cost a little more.

best buy's service sucks. i have been bait and switched twice (not on PCs, but a speaker system and service after on it) and while i only speak for the boston area, i will always recommend against best buy.

This case happened seven years ago! I do not think it reflects Best Buys current practices. FYI you will always pay more at Retail Outlets.

They definately have shady sales tactics and their prices are normally stupid high. The only time I buy stuff from them is when they have a good sale going.

I will take BestBuy over any internet retailer
any day of the week. Um, i'm not sure but isn't

It is ultimatly the consumer who is responsible to
do their research before buying a product. If they
are even remotely educated they can see a good deal
from a bad deal. If you want to blame anyone for
this nonsense, blame Microsoft. They are always
trying to force products into your home. They probably threatned Best Buy like they did with alot
of other companies and said if you don't push our
products will dump you, that would scare buisness.

I have dealt with over a dozen online retailers
includeing the ones mentioned above, and frankly
what little money you do save is not worth the
risk you take. What happens if you don't like a
product you buy online? You pay for shipping to send it back and a 10% restocking fee at the
least. Not to mention you will have to go back to
their website and fill out a form to request for an RMA #.

I only go to Bestbuy to buy things on small such as 50pack Sony DVD R for $12.99.

Other than that... those off the rack computers are utterly rip off.

Making a profit is one thing, and I'm fine with it.

However, having a policy of misleading a customer, a policy of saying you will do not do X, then going ahead and doing X once the customer has left the store? That's criminal.

And having a lawyer destroy evidence of that policy? That, too, is criminal.

Perhaps the lawyer has fessed up now BECAUSE 7 years has passed, and he know the statute of limitations will keep him from doing jail time. If so, this is just another example of Money buying innocence. Best Buy committed a crime and dodged justice. Their lawyer committed a crime, and is dodging justice. Best Buy will now take all those lawyers fees and charge their customers, who are now doubly screwed.

Vito: If you look at the return policies of those places you'll see they all have a 15% restocking fee.

I generally buy from smaller places, but if you have trouble they can give you a lot more hassles than if you went with a place like Bestbuy.

"Bricks and mortar" is expensive. So is the staff. And sometimes there is no substitute for being able to browse shelves and bins.

Hey, im not denying that the policies, such as the restocking fees and return policies don't have their uses at the same time though the whole restocking fee issue can be avoided if you become a smart consumer and researching something before you buy it but yes i will totally agree with the fact that smaller companies can be a pain to deal with if there is a problem....and once more....go with a place that has a good reputation and treats customers well... yes they do exist you just have to stop thinking that futureshope or best buy or bug box stores are the be all and end all

I've been done with this company for almost three years now. I refuse to visit/shop with them B&M or online.

Their practices have been deceptive on many fronts, including advertising. I can name more than one incident (at least three come to mind immediately;) therefore, three strikes and you are out. I not only do not miss shopping with this "worst in class" organization...I am happy to say I made my decision long before this news ever came out. Oh, and no, this news was not a shock. It is just a shock it did not all come out much earlier.

I have spent quite a bit of money personally AND professionally that could have been purchased from them in the last three years AND I am happy to say not one penny went to them. Plus, I share my experiences with others to give them a chance to choose another option, should they so desire.

No matter what city I am in...one thing is consistent in Best Buy. A group of blue shirts chatting...with little regard for the wandering customer.

Best Buy is a good place to experience an item first hand, prior to buying elsewhere.

Blueshirt Bullcrap. I love the layout of that store, but its their employees that drove me off years ago (not to mention the horrible prices--in general).

This does not look good for BestBuy. I suspect that BestBuy, in trying to make profits, "impressed" upon its middle management to "encourage" such shaddy actions. Just how much "encouragement" is left to the specific managers. Of course, I imagine some of them, who were intent on making an impression to their boss or their own bonuses, were quite agressive on this matter.

I guess the key to verify/proof if this is a widely confirmed practice in all stores or just some random actions of a few stores. The implication could cost BestBuy millions.

The word "gyp" is slang and a pejorative term referencing Gypsies and is very disparaging. I always enjoy reading TG Daily but Ijust wanted to bring this to the writer's and editor's attention. I hope that it wouldn't be used again and edited from this article. Also, no, I'm not from the Roma people also known as Gypsies, but I do know what it is to be denigrated with words.

All retailers are the same when it comes to
advertising on it's websites. If you goto Circuit
City or anyother electronics outlets website, they
all do the same. They offer you an online discount
because they can save money shipping it dirrectly to your home. If they don't want to honor their
advertisment price than just don't buy it. your
the consumer who should be educated about whats a good deal and what isn't.

As far as the lawyer goes, yes he was stupid
and careless and yes he should be disbarred and
fined. But really this is all about nothing!

I used to be the Lead Technician or Service Tech Supervisor. Besides doing the services and repairs we are also responsible for working together with the computer sales department. I can verify practices are unethical and shady. There is a lot of pressure to do these types of sales as well and in the end I was fired for refusing to follow them despite my departments excellent performance otherwise. They do a lot of bait and switching also and the whole store is trained in the best "sales tactics" regularly which really translates to "scam artist training". They also took my stock options away from me after letting me go. So yes, Best Buy is evil, and should be avoided at all costs. Use them to demo the products, then go elsewhere to buy them online for typically much cheaper without the Blueshirt propganda campaign spewing robots harrassing you.

Not that any "ism" works great, but this article just brings to light one of the nasty symptoms of capitalism - excessive greed. Profit is supreme (the entire system is based off of profit), and in the face of that a companies moral obligations to give way to the green bottom line. Take what is happening here, for instance - and not just this sort of situation but the other ones that have been revealed over the years. Best Buy is just one of many electronics retailers that cheat and lie to increase that margin - trust me, I've worked for Fry's Electronics and Best Buy (as a supervisor) and let me tell you, this sort of thing is incredibly common. These companies encourage everything from the classic "Bait n' Switch" (ad items that are intentionally not stocked to bring you into the store and then they sell you something else) to even more nefarious methods of nailing you in your wallet (such as lying about the terms of a credit card as you're applying for it - even more at Fry's than BB). Trust me - it's ugly! And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Just so you know, all of those retailers are constantly trying to scam you.

Take my advice - shop Tigerdirect, newegg, etc UNLESS it's going to be hella-expensive to ship -or- you might not like it and need to return it.

Thanks to Capitalism we have the choice of which company to frequent and therefore can choose to take our business somewhere else as a result of bad business practices such as those displayed by Best Buy in this instance.

Thus far, I haven't been scammed at my local Best Buy, and I've spent thousands of dollars there. I'm sorry that other people have had bad experiences with this retail chain.

i really dislike best buy with a passion for what it does too people to get them too buy stuff they really dont need. If i had $1 for every bogus warranty sold at my one store i could retire and be the next hugh hefner. We are given "sales training" videos and it is more like watching Nazi propoganda in history class. Go to best buy, see what you want in the flesh then buy it off newegg for 30-50% less.

I bought an item online. The very next day it was $8 less. They refused to price match. Their claim was that they only price match when things go on sale. They said this was not on sale, but that the price was just lowered...so no price match. No matter what you call it, the price is now lower and I should get back the difference! So, as I promised the "customer service" person I would do, I am here to tell anyone who will listen that they screwed me. It was only $8. I no longer shop there and I have convinced many friends/family to buy elsewhere also. You don't have to be too good at numbers to see that they would have been way ahead money-wise if they had just refunded me my damn $8!! :)

A comment above mentions that this happened 7 years ago. Read down a little further and see that the case has been reopened...meaning this is happening right now. What a shock that Microsoft is somehow involved!

They are selling all type of damaged electronic devices, computers, televisions, etc that are manufactured in Communist China and negligently put together. The result is that you get a mechanism that will not operate accordingly. Also their deceptive Insurance Plan is never honored and they refuse to be responsible for such!

Thus, this is a criminal enterprise that is misrepresenting the interest of the Public and many victims don't know where to go. Also, when you as a consumer contact Best Buy Headquarter in Minnesota, they also refuse to replace or exchange or refund your item. This is plan and simple "Fraud".
