Redmond (WA) - Monday's addition of Zelda II will bring the Wii's Virtual Console library to over 100 titles.  Nintendo says nearly five million games have been purchased from the virtual store in the six and a half months since the console's debut.

On June 4, Nintendo will add another slate of games to the Virtual Console, headlined by Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.  This will bring the total number of titles available from the digital download service to over 100.

Nintendo also announced today that over 4.7 million game downloads have been processed through the Virtual Console, averaging about 16 downloads every minute since the console's debut on November 19 of last year.

The top five downloads so far are, in order, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario World, and The Legend of Zelda.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 already had around 100 Xbox Live Arcade titles by the time the Wii was released, leaving Sony's Playstation 3 in third place in terms of number of games available.  The Playstation Store has around a couple titles.  Sony has also not been able to update the store on a consistent weekly basis the way the Xbox Live Arcade and Virtual Console have.

"Beyond the Wii Shop Channel, all types of people are getting connected and checking out the information and entertainment options available on the Wii Menu," said long-time marketing VP for Nintendo, George Harrison.  However, the Wii remains the only home console in this generation to have no games that offer online multiplayer.  According to third-party publishers, the Wii's online gaming service won't be fully developed until 2008.
