I'm not about stealing but this DRM/AACS crap has to go. If I want to rip my move or music to my media server I should be able to.

Seriously, is viewing genuine content you pay for legal? I never got a strait answer.

At some point the movie people will get the idea of what people want to do with thier content. Place it on a server so they can watch any movie any time any place in thier house.... WoW it took the Music people awhile to get it and now you can buy music without DRM from iTunes... this is great

AACS will be broken a million times over before hollywood comes to realize that they have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to improve an already out-of-date protection system. Introducing new keys would only add to the cost of manufacturing and that cost does not benefit the consumer but only bleed them. The only way for a new key to not be discovered is if it is never accessed in the first place, but that just misses the whole point of the key ain't it. What is needed is out-of-the-box thinking for content protectors, but the new solution must also be a damn cheap one.


What I find stupid about the hollywood producers
lack the creativity in selling their products. Say, iTunes, it had arguably been the most successful online, legal, music distribution service over the internet. The technologies are here, why not use them?

Maybe if they dropped the price of content to something ideal, then people could then think about buying the real thing in the first place. Plus all this additional cost of hollywood protecting its investment would eventually bite them back. HDCP and AACS only adds to the complexity and cost of watching a movie, it simply would turn off most people. Unlike in the days of VCD's and DVD's where a DVD player and TV was all you needed, plain damn simple. Now you need a high-def tv (fine), an hd player (fine), cables (fine), but your hardware also needs to support HDCP and AACS (wtf? but my tv doesn't have that, so i'm basically screwed, is that it?).

As long as people live on this Earth, there will always be someone smart enough to find a way to decrypt the content.

If they realise that protection solves nothing, piracy will always exist, how about competing with piracy at a commercial level ? Calculate the cost of a writeable BD-R or HDDVD-R cost of downloading the 20-50G movie, and sell the movies at the same or slightly lower price ? Ah, and without content protection schemes it will be cheaper to produce the disks.

That way ppl will find it more convenient to actually go to store or order from the net an original disk, instead of eating up their hdd space...

Your answer: Yes, only if the content is HDCP protected, all the movies that are released today HDCP is not enabled and even if it was you would see the movie in lower resolution...720p or 480p isn't that bad even if you payed 60 buck for that.

You can't stop pirates. It's a simple and undeniable fact of life.

However, the existence of any (even fully broken) form of copy protection is ALREADY enough to stop the average user. You don't see them using No-CD patches on all their games, or copying discs with even minor copy protection, do you? Even at the most minimal level, you've already stopped it at the only level you're going to stop it.

Now why would you want to start hurting the consumers beyond that point? It goes against every rule of logic we've ever created.

I specifically remember the last time a key was found and it was posted on digg. digg was told to take it down, and then came the revolt. then tomshardware had a video where those two guys talked about the revolt and one of them was saying "its illegal, blah blah, people dont understand its illegal, wine wine." well why is tomshardware posting this key here?

ok, i get it. you are right. the context that its used in is different. i dont agree with it, but it makes me laugh.

so if all those blogs just treated this more like a news story, rather than show-and-tell, then maybe the AACS wouldn't be so upset? hehe

Why is it so important to encrypt the content because it's high definition? The pirates and the people buying pirated goods don't care if it's HD or not. They'll just copy the DVD instead.

As for making a copy for your own use thats's already allowed isn't it? albeit still encrypted.

Now here's what I don't understand. When you decrypt using the AACS keys, is the content now stripped of all the encryption, in the clear?

I ask this because, I read in another article that they could change the keys or firmware to make the copies unplayable. Is this true?

Maybe they haven't found the master keys for the whole system yet. also I'm surprised someone hasn't cracked the HDCP yet.

Truth be told that anything created by man will be destroyed (cracked) by man.

If they truely want to be profitable in this business they NEED to lower their prices to the point it's cheaper to buy the real thing!
