Dell already cheapen their products and in order to be appealing for Walmart shoppers for low prices they have to make them even cheaper!! How low can Dell go before the entire computer is being held together by gum?

WALLY world, selling dells.. So will it just be the plain vanilla boxes? i guess with no customization? If the computer breaks will Wally world have WALLY's There for tech supporT??

Part of the reason that Dell has been so successful is because of their B2C business model. If they started selling computers in retail outlets, what makes them any different from HP? Either they are planning on lower profit margins for the Walmart computers or they will have to jack the prices up on the website so as to not compete with their Walmart counterparts.

The following is my personal opinion based on experience of prior Wal-mart electronic pruchases.

As an IT student and later as an IT professional, I have always stated that Wal-mart is not a good place to buy electronics. I could be wrong, but I avoid Walmart for all Electronics. This goes for everything from TV's to VCR's to DVD's and Computer's. This applies only to the actual hardware components.

I dont think their selection is good enough quality or that they will handle electronics with enough care.

This is my personal opinion.

In otherwords I prefer to go to Best Buy. I have found also that deals on TV's can be had at places like Sears.

I doubt if Dell can keep up with the supply chain of Wal-mart.

Rippleyaliens...In case you didn't know this, it is the manufacture that provides support, NOT the retailer. HP/Dell/Gateway...support the machine no matter where they are sold.

So how does the go with there slogan of a "We don't build PCs for everyone, we build them for one"?

I am certain DELL and Walmart will start small by doing a small sample group of stores to see the results. If promising/profitable, they will expand to all. This is neither good nor bad news. Just a business decision.

Believe it or not, there are far more crappy computers out there than DELL. From design, quality, and price points of view.

3,000 stores is far from "starting small".

All this is, is Dell's reaction to more and more people building their own PC's. Profit margins in the last oh, 5-6 years have dwindled to nothing for system builders like Dell, HP etc. because almost everyone these days knows someone who can build them an equal or better computer for the same price; typically much better if the person already has a monitor and is just looking to upgrade the core system, which is highly likely.

It's quite obvious Dell is starting to grasp at straws because if the profit margins were halfway decent they probably wouldn't be partnering with the world's retail giant that is Wal-Mart.

This is just another band-aid effort on behalf of Dell (like trying to entice Linux users by preinstalling Ubuntu) in an effort to keep from having to lay off quite a few of their system builders, which would freak out investors even more in a time of slow sales, thus damaging share values (ie. investment).

The writing is now on the wall...and not only for Dell.

This is Dell trying to sell more computers since they were hurt when they went with AMD. It's a good step UP for Wal-Mart. The systems they were selling weren't any good. This is certainly a sign of Dell's times though. If they can sell lots of computers for cheap they can make good money, and they can provide more limited warranties with the cheaper parts. AMD is likely also taking a cut here. By mass-producing chips for Dell who sells them cheap, they're both staying in business and competing. Unfortunately it's on the low end...Looks like Intel and build it yourself might be the way to go for awhile, unless you want an average computer on the cheap. This could also be seen as good, as it may get Intel/nVidia to lower prices to stay competitive.

In as few words as possible: they deserve each other.

I do not see how Dell is actually any good quality.

They sell you a laptop for 400 bucks but they are selling the minimum. Once upgrading to today's standard, your already spending twice the original price.

Not to mention the desktop case. Urgh... so poorly design. When you work in a PC repair shop, you see so many flaws in their cases.

Only noobs buy comps off the shelf and from Dell.

Back in the 486 Days, you could buy brand new Dell PCs at Walmart. This is nothing new, just getting back in bed with each other.

I jump in my gaz-gusseling SVU and hurry past the mega-church, down to my favorite super-store where the land is cheap. Splashing past small throngs of unimportant bus-stop people, I arrive to stake my place at the edge of a nine-acre filthy parking lot.

I eventually return home with a particle board workstation/kiosk and a somewhat obsolete computer. Feverishly, I set up my new hardware underneath framed portraits of Sam ('mean buzzard') Walton and Michael ('dough boy') Dell.

I love rich white guys! Life is so grand.

1) Yes, Dell sells overpriced PCs. But Dell also provides excellent 24/7 tech support for all of the retardted population out there who would be otherwise lost. Dell tech-support does everything but wipe you @$$ for you, and 99% of the US population needs it. So why do I like Dell? Because I get fewer friends calling ME asking for help. You pay for the service - get it? Of COURSE you rare smart-people don't need that - but then again think about the entire sheep-like US population and ask yourself if YOU feel like fixing everyone's computers.

2) Whoever says that Dell is in bed with AMD needs to look at Dell's product line-up - which happens to be 95% Intel products (idiots). Know your facts!

3) Dell partnering with Wall-Mart is nothing but a direct attempt to compete with HP, who is currently dominating the markets that Dell once lorded over. It is strictly a business descision, and actually makes sense if Dell wants to stay in the market (once again I remind you all - 98% of the US population that thinks that Wall-Mart is the best thing to happen to them since tax-returns). And as far as quality goes, Dell/HP PCs are both good quality, not that I'd rather build my own for less! They just aren't trying to appeal to you people - they are reaching for all the sheep out there.
