Karlsbad (Germany) - Video editing software company Nero announced today that Nero Linux 3 is available worldwide, claiming it is the first Linux application to support Blu-ray and HD DVD burning.

Nero Linux 3 is also the first in the seris to offer 64-bit native support.  Additionally, the new application boosts its audio-centric features, including high speed digital audio extraction and an embedded audio encoder/decoder/transcoder that supports Ogg, Flac, Wav, and MP3 formats.

The first Blu-ray burners were made available months before standalone players hit the stores in late summer 2006, but until now the most popular open source operating system has been excluded from hi-def disc burning software.

Nero Linux 3 is available as a digital download as well as a full retail boxed version from the company's online store.

What about growisofs/mkisofs? Blu-ray burning is supported for a while now in GNU/Linux (as well as *BSD).

I've seen Nero for Linux , tried it but no thanks , I'll still go with K3b. I don't know if it supports Blu-ray or whatever but I don't care either. I just bought a DVD burner for 30 $ an I'm happy with that. Blu-ray and HD DVD are too expensive for now , but I'm sure the prices will drop given some time. Until then DVD will do just fine for me and many others too I think. As for 64 bit I don't really know , isn't K3b capable of 64 bit ? It really should be but I don't have 64 bit yet :D.

It's good to see commercial companies take the time to support Linux (regardless of whether people like it or not). It at least shows potential and opens up choice. Go Nero... Now let's be able to play HD-DVD/BluRay "legally"... (Just to make it easier for "my mom").
