Well, most DDR2 PC800s 2gig chips, are pretty high in latency averaging 5-5-5-15. I wonder what the latency will be on these chips if they are set on 4 gigs, 10-8-10-20? I wonder if it's really going to be worth it. I'm so tempted to go with 4 sticks of PC800s with timings like 2-2-2-5 at this point.

Where did you get the 5% increase from? In the article it says 2x faster at the same clock. Combine that with the expectation that DDR3 clock speeds will increase quite a bit beyond DDR2. Latencies aside, this RAM should be quite a bit faster. My question is, which motherboards support DDR3?

Several sites have already benchmarked Corsair & Mishkin's DDR3 modules commercially available today, and while the specifications of the modules may not resemble those of OCZ's they are probably close enough to matter.

For the most part they indicate a 4-8% increase in performance in most practical tests (Ie. Gaming, Conversion & Compression) and up to 18% in raw bandwidth tests, but even that was only achieved on Intel's P35 chipset which is proven to provide a 5% increase in memory performance on its own, so essentially we're getting less than 5% improvement.

I don't know if I'm allowed to provide links to benchmarks here, but a brief Google search will likely yield some findings.

but at 1333mhz it's faster as much as 10%. in bencharmks! usually only 5% in applications and gaming.

While I agree with most here that DDR3 doesn't offer enough performance per dollar to justify an upgrade at this time, let's not forget when the industry giants started force-feeding DDR2 to the consumers it actually performed much poorer then the top DDR modules.

Look, there has never been a question that the memory will be better. Hell DDR4 is loaded into the shot gun as the second bullet.

So no one is crapping on new technology, we always need it and always desire to have it. The discussion is at what point is it worth it. Is it better to have 4 gig of ram or 2 gigs of 5% on average faster ram?

Bleeding edge is not the always the best thing. If the technology at the point you're purchasing it only offers a marginal boost then what I was saying it's better to pass on it. That's my opinion 3 to 7 FPS increase should never equate to I must do the upgrade ASAP at double the cost.

Especially when crossing the finish line first has no real reward. I used this anology when discussing this in a thread about the 8800 and how people rushed out to get it in SLI with no real use for it. Which in my mind is DX10.

If some loser ran out and purchased two 8800 in SLI mode when it was first released. Turned on madden and was still disconnecting in the first quarter when losing by 21 was it really worth the upgrade?

So the only difference is a loser gets to play the first quarter in a higher resolution, but still is a loser at the end of the day.
