Redmond (WA) - Microsoft is patching 19 critical vulnerabilities as part of its regular “Patch Tuesday” round of fixes.  The fixes cover security holes in Windows, Office and Internet Explorer.  Two of the fixes are for Microsoft’s newest operating system Vista.

Seven patches were for Microsoft Office products which includes a fix for vulnerability in Word that currently has an exploit in the wild.  One patch fixes a problem within Microsoft’s newest office suite Office 2007.

On the enterprise side, one fix solves a nasty DNS service vulnerability within Windows Server 2000 and 2003.  For the past few weeks, hackers have been breaking into servers by exploiting this hole.

Microsoft is urging users to upgrade through either Automatic Updates within Windows or the Windows Update website.  You can read Microsoft’s security bulletin detailing all the patches here.

I patched both my systems and upon rebooting had to reset Firefox to be my default browser. Pain in the glutus maximus but that's a minor annoyance.

Need More Competitors

MS needs more competitors. The Feds should negate any contract from MS that keeps computer companies from installing any non-Win os onto their computers. Computer companies admitted such a contract just recently. Having little or no choice for an os, MS seesm to not really care about the quality of their os. What choice do users have but to buy Win with their purchase of a pc? Fortunately one can install another OS but one still has to pay for Win even if one never intends to use it. I am glad their is a company that pre-installs my favorite os. OS/2 World Curtis Systems Softeware Inc

Only Vista If...

I think the only reason to switch to vista is for direct X 10 games. It's a rip off that they can DX10 on XP but wont so they can force you to vista. XP is faster all around including execution of software and the vista eye candy is not worth the price to upgrade. Besides XP can technically be installed on more than one of your machines (although microsoft doesn't like it :-). I have three PC's and a laptop. Only upgrading one to vista for the games.

5 billion and 5 years for this half baked turkey. Why would anyone want it? What's it going to do for you? DRM up the wazzu. "Gadgets" give me a break. You like it I don't, vista is about what you can't do with your computer. I won't touch it for at least another year. However, it is good that they're trying to fix it. XP has two service packs with the second being a major rewrite plus 80 some odd security updates you have to wonder if Gates's house isn't built on sand. There has to be some new thinking in the whole industry, we're drowning in MS crap.

Want competition? Good luck trying to break into the OS market. Ubuntu is probably your best bet and I don't see it gaining much ground anytime soon. With big business and government supporting MS, nothing can touch it. Besides, do you realize MS drives the computer hardware, security, and IT industries with its archaic bloatware? If a secure, efficient, grass-roots supported OS overtook Windows the entire economy in Europe, Asia, and America would crash.

You guys talk like XP was great when it first came out. Every O/S,application, GAMES has patches, updates, etc when it is released. And only two of the 19 updates were for Vista. I guess that is pretty bad, huh?
