Bentonville (AR) - The world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart is converting some of its stores to solar power.  The company is working with SunPower, SunEdision and BP Solar to add solar cells to a few dozen California and Hawaii stores.  Wal-Mart believes solar energy could provide up to 30 percent of the store’s power usage.

In all 22 Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and a distribution center will be converted.  Wal-Mart says the aggregate energy produced will be 20 million kilowatt-hours per year and the system would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6500 to 10000 metric tons.  According to Wal-Mart, the system could be one of the top 10 solar power initiatives in the United States and the company eventually wants all of its energy to come from renewable sources.

The store conversions will be divided up between the three firms with SunPower and BP Solar converting seven stores each, while Sun Edision will convert eight stores.
