London (England) - Sony announced details today about its first-party digital camera for the portable PSP system.  Named the "Go Cam", it will come out in Europe first before making to North America.

The Go Cam will function both as a still picture camera and a digital camcorder, with a built-in microphone.  It will mount on top of the PSP and can turn 180 degrees.

Sony added digital camera functionality for the PSP in a system update months ago.  The Go Cam will be the first device that can actually make use of the new menu button.

In addition, the camera will include a UMD disc of "Go Edit", a video/photo editing application for the PSP.  The retail price is set at EUR 50, roughly $70.  It's set to go on sale in Europe on May 16, with a U.S. debut expected in the months to come.

Europe is also scheduled to get Sony's Playstation Eye for the PS3 in June.

Anyone remember what happened to the Gameboy camera? Exactly... I have a Canon Powershot S3 IS. And I'm willing to bet that except for kids who own PSP's, anyone who has one already has a nice or semi decent digital camera anyway. Just another useless accessory.

…Yes I have a digital camera, but not a digital camcorder. If it’s pretty good quality I’d consider getting one. Plus this could open up other applications on the psp such as video chat and eye toy games.

quality will not be as good as a good digital camera but you only have to carry the psp... imagine carrying - portable gaming platform - mp3 player - camera - pda - other stuff that is/will be integrated maybe not excellent on every aspect but good in general and no need to carry a bunch of stuff...

Um, sounds like my phone, moo. And TPM, check your camera - 99.9% of digital cameras have a video mode, usually at a pretty decent 640x480 with 30fps. Most record sound and most new ones also make use of the optical zoom. I seriously doubt the Go!Cam will be as good - it's a useless accessory.
