But I'd be pretty pissed if my daughter had just put a $20,000 bid on anything and won it. She's not the one who has to pay for it.

Are you kidding? $20k is a steal for it. Although I doubt that it is still functional, but I belive just the high quality composites/steel on the jet alone should be worth it.

First, I wonder who sells something like this? The military probably doesn't sell their stuff on ebay, do they? Neither do museums, I would guess.

And second, is it even legal to sell/buy something like this without proper qualifications? I don't think a hunting license from Gander Mountain qualifies for a 30mm canon on a jet.

If this sucker is functional I doubt Neil could afford the jet fuel, but then again he did pay $20,000 to start off.

If you would just click on the link and read the Ananova article, you would learn that the aircraft is not functional: no computer and no engine.

ON the link included, it stated something like : due to european regulations, the engine and onboard flying computers had to be removed prior to purchase, and that if you want an engine, please fork over $20,000 more for it.

Well my wife was 16 when we got married. If you add 14 on to that she wouldbe 30. Why is 39 so young? What world do you live in? By the way before you say anything last Sun. we were married 25 years and we have no kids.

It's not worth the upkeep. It's probably nonfunctional. Plus, the UK government will probably require the 30mm cannons be either removed or disabled (if they aren't already). Getting a ~22 year old jet in flyable condition would be very expensive. By the way, (I'm pretty sure) a combat jet burns about a gallon of fuel a SECOND! ;^)

Also, flying a ~22 year old jet can actually be dangerous. Remember the incident with the passenger jet near Hawaii some years ago? The upper body of the jet ripped away and a stewardess was sucked out over the Pacific Ocean. The jet managed to land safely. This old passenger jet had suffered metal fatigue due to the many compression and decompression cycles through the years.

I know there are other individuals who buy jets and actually fly them. There are a number of people who own Mig 21's and Mig 29's. If I had a choice between buying and maintaining a Harrier or a Mig 29, I'd choose the Mig 29 because it's easier to fly and cheaper to maintain. Parts from the former Soviet Union are very cheap and the design of the Mig 29 is simpler because it's not a jump jet.

I think the new owner will probably either part it out or sell it whole (if he's lucky).

first off the F-14s just retired were over twenty years old. Many of the jets you fly on today minus the 777 and A-340 and soon A380s and B787. Are on average over, or near 20 years old. The Hawaii accident was because there were fractures in the skin of the plane, something they check for regularly now.
