I have to admit that's amazing work they've done there and with the pushing of HD DVDs or Blue Ray I can see storage medium sizes going up as well. We'll definitely need that much bandwidth soon, no single person will need it but imagine a whole city utilizing a few of these, this will lower costs quite a bit!

What's the speed of Internet 1? 9 Gbps is cool and rather fast, but how does those numbers stack up against internet 1? What's the maximum speed of a similar transfer with present internet technology?
What kind if speeds can consumers/corporations expect in the end? What kind of increase in speed are we talking about here?

What do you mean not justified? Imagine downloading a HD movie while using VoIP to talk to your mom and playing an online game. All this while your kids play Xbox with his counsins in other States and your significant other has a video conference with business associates in Tokyo. Sure, while this may never actually happen everyday, 24 a day, I love the idea of wanting to watch a particular HD movie, not having to go to Blockbuster and hope to find it and be able to get in the time it takes to pop a bag of popcorn.

While everyone seems to be impressed with, keep in mind this is a fraction of the bandwidth utilized by the Internet. Comcast has 12 million high speed subscribers at a minimum of 6Mbps. That speed would only sustain 1700 of them at full speed. Internet2 has been around for 10 years and this is what they have to show for it. It will only ever serve as a research vehicle for new WAN technologies.

10 gbps (a nice round number that is a little higher) translates into 1250 megabytes per second. Considering that a reasonable desktop drive can only write data at around 40 megabytes per second, I dont see how anyone is downloading anything that fast until they buy a thirty two drive RAID array. Even with wicked fast raptor 150s, you would need a minimum of twenty four of them striped to be able to keep up (this figure assumes a sustained write at 60 megs. A decidely utopian concept, actually.)

Comcast is a shared cable network. They rely upon the fact that out of 12 million subscribers, only 500,000 will be downloading anything at once. They also rely on multi-homed, multi-tiered backbone connections to the broad intenet.

Same with all the major ISPs, whether cable, DSL, fiber, sat, dialup, etc. They have a finite amount of bandwidth and rely on their customers not sucking all of it all at once. This is why you see certain ISPs coming down hard on the folks who download hundreds of gigs per month when the average is somewhere in the 4-10 range.

I2 is unique in that they are creating point to point connections over very long distances using regular or dark fiber, which is not an easy feat. In this world, taking even one bit of data 25k miles sometimes doesnt work, and to take 1 gig of data and transfer it in one second that long is impressive.

Isn't the big deal about internet 2 the way that they plan to regulate it??? How are you gonna download porno and bootleg movies if the FCC regulates every bit of video and audio that is uploaded to the internet 2? I thought that was the whole idea behind creating a seperate internet. Internet as we know it is neutral, will internet 2 be neutral...or will it be watched carefully by the people that own it so that anything deemed innappropriate can be kept off it. Like I said, why else would they build a seperate internet, unless they plan to regulate everything on it based on their own beliefs and agenda. What good is 9.08 Gbps available bw if you have to work with the FCC before you can upload a damned video clip. It won't be goodtimes for humanity without free speech on such a powerful tool.

The internet 2 is not for the public, it was designed for universities around the world and researchers around the world to work on projects together allowing them to have as close as possible real-time connection to share research results or work on projects, the internet2 is strictly for educational purposes.

Does the PC or the cables ommit high levels of radiation at such high a transfer speed? I am just being cautious, for example there are studies that cell phone radiation causes brain cancer.

It will happen the same with Internet 2 too

And while we'll be using our harddrives/solidstatedrives only as cache for the huge storage network, they will develop Internet 3 for communication outside the planet, to the moon and mars colonies ;)
