Santa Clara (CA) – Intel has notified system vendors that it will be phasing out three Netburst architecture-based Xeon processors.

According to a product change notification released late yesterday, Intel has begun its product discontinuance program for the DP Xeon processors with 2.4 GHz and 2.8 GHz as well as a low-voltage model clocked at 2.0 GHz. Last orders for these processors will be taken on April 11, 2008. All three models are currently marketed in the embedded systems market for applications such as web and storage servers, search engines, telecommunications servers, network management, security, voice and load balancing devices.

Intel recently announced that it will extend its quad-core Xeon 5300-series processors with Clovertown core into the embedded market, which means that the aging Netburst processors will be retired in the foreseeable future. For now, Intel will continue to offer a 3.2 GHz (FSB800, 103 watt) version of the old Xeon DP as well as a 2.0 GHz (FSB400, 58 watt) version for embedded applications.
