Irving (TX) - In a rather unusual move, Nokia has launched a new high-end cellphone in the U.S. before its typically preceding launch in European key markets. The new N95 GPS and HSDPA capable phone is available through two Nokia stores as well as “selected” retailers for $750.

Nokia actually does not consider the N95 a phone, but pitches the device as a “multimedia computer” because of its functionality. Among the more advanced features are a 5-megapixel camera high a Carl-Zeiss glass lens as well as a GPS module with software support for 150 countries. Information is displayed on a 2.6” color display (16.7 million colors) and stored on 160 MB internal memory as well as an included 1 GB microSD memory card.

The N95 also supports more and more common features in multimedia phones such as audio and video playback a TV-out cable is included), 480p video recording in 30 frames per second as well as Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet. The phone can run in 850/900/1800/2100 EDGE/GSM bands and supports WCDMA/HSDPA 2100 networks.

The Nokia N95 is selling at Nseries.com, through Nokia’s flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as retailers and local dealers in major markets including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco, Nokia said. The suggested retail price is $749.

Nokia recently received FCC approval for another GPS phone: The 6110 Navigator (PDF link) is positioned below the N95 and is not expected to come to the U.S. in the foreseeable future.
