Redmond (WA) - Microsoft has released an updated version of its MS07-017 patch that fixes some incompatibility problems with the animated cursor vulnerability patch.  Early installers of the original patch that was issued on Tuesday reported seeing error messages with their Realtek HD Audio Control panel.

Some Realtek users were receiving error messages saying, “Illegal System DLL Relocation” upon bootup.  Microsoft says the message pops up because the user32.dll and the hhctrl.ocx files have the same memory address after the patch.

In addition to Realtek, users of three lesser known programs could be affected.  Those programs are ElsterFormular, TUGZip and CD-Tag.  Microsoft says it could add more programs to the list if users report more problems.

It is interesting that the security patch for the .ani vulnerability is pushed to all regardless of WGA validation status, but that the only way to get the fix for what the patch breaks is to pass the WGA validation test. The fix post date is the same as the patch post date. Could MS have known exactly what they were doing?

MS seems to have removed the WGA test for downloading the fix. Maybe it was just a practice run.

Issues with Acer Laptop

I got the exact error you mentioned on my new Acer 3573 laptop after installing the original patch. It came up with the "illegal system DLL Relocation" error and also said that i had an illegal installation of windows xp (which is strange as the laptop came with XP preinstalled!) Also had issues with desktop icons being corrupted and not displaying and the system would not shut down properly. Anyways, after installing the patch (which mind you, Humphrey - your link is missing the "..../en-us" to the end) everything is ok now

it also stops activesync 4.1 from running or being installed on the system. My bluetooth stack driver isnt also working anymore. i cant reinstall these items.
