Sacramento (CA) - A radio contest for a free Wii that ended up in the death of a 28-year-old woman is not worthy of a criminal charge, according to prosecutors who investigated the case.

On January 16, Sacramento station KDND held a contest to see who could drink the most water in a single sitting. The winner received a free Wii console. Participant Jennifer Lea Strange, who ended up in second place, died of water intoxication a few hours after the contest was over.

City prosecutors recently said they would not be filing criminal charges because Strange showed no symptoms until after she left the radio station.  "There were no observable indications or symptoms that Jennifer Strange was experiencing a serious medical emergency which would have required station employees to seek or administer medical aid to her," said the district attorney in a statement.

The three hosts and seven other employees were fired as a result of the tragic event.  Strange's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against KDND, which is still ongoing.

There are many things that can ultimately harm the human body, some of them just dont line up right with common sense, and some things wouldnt seem that bad just thinking about it. although the station should have probably gathered more information on the effects of H2O in the body, i dont see fault. I do beleive this was some form of accident. I also think this was a form of tragedy, and should be respected as such. We should all try show a little empathy for Jennifers friends and family.

based on the "darwin" comment and the "greed" comment, there'd be a bunch of ticked off christians.... hahah. But in reality.... this is called natural selection... do something stupid or go into anything ignorantly, you die.... that's something that americans won't accept, and they're stupid for it.... and like to sue because they feel that somebody other than the "victim" has to be at fault, when in reality... the "victim" is the person that puts themselves in danger.... same reason I won't work in dangerous jobs anymore.

The family of the victim has the right to sue. The victim is not entirely responsible in this case. If you can accept that the victim was stupid then you would have to agree that this contest is stupid also right? So who bares the repsonsiblity here? If you feel the death was entirely the victim's fault, then you would suggest it is ok for the radio station have this contest again right? And then another victim? The right to sue allows for the proper amount of responsibility to be delegated to the each party. Why do you think they fired 10 people? The station knows already they were in the wrong, and I hope the station has insurance for the victim's sake. This is a sad story. I hope the family will be ok.
