New Yorkers queued to buy the new Motorola Droid smartphone last night. More than a hundred people keen to be the first to get their digits on the $199.99 gadget queued outside the Verizon store in Manhattan, waiting for the chimes at midnight.

Verizon opened its store specially between midnight and two am for those desperate for a Droid, which went on general release at seven am this morning.

Analyst outfit Gartner reckons at least 40 new Android-based phones are set to appear on the market in 2010 and that they will be in overall second place in the market to the iPhone by the end of 2012, with the Blackberry in third place.
