TG Daily CES 2006 special coverage

At the upcoming CES 2006 show in Las Vegas, XM Radio will show off their Advanced Services concept car which will have streaming video in addition to traditional satellite radio. The 2006 Lexus LX 470 SUV will also have a VoiceBox voice-command system, WeatherLink weather warning system and ParkingLink parking space finder. VoiceBox will let drivers change channels simply by talking to the car, while ParkingLink will show the number of parking spaces available at specially-equipped locations.

The concept car's video will either be streamed live or played from storage. XM's regular radio satellites will transmit the video. There is no word on what sort of videos will be played and XM has not said if they actually plan to market video streaming.

Channel changing with traditional XM systems can be frustrating and possibly dangerous experience, but VoiceBox lets drivers use conversational speech to change radio channels. According to XM the driver would say that category of music and then the player will ask which particular channel they want. XM Radio generally has several different channels for each music category.

Satellite weather-reporting services have been in use for a few years and XM has marketed their XM WX Satellite Weather service to private aviation for the last two years. The concept car will demonstrate WeatherLink which will give drivers the weather conditions for the road ahead.

Finally, XM will be showing off ParkingLink which will show the actual number of spaces and color-code the filled capacity for specially equipped parking facilities. This is also nothing new as many new malls will show the number of available spaces for each level of the parking structure.
