Nexus 7 sales nearing a million per month

Google's Nexus 7 tablet is truly the definition of success.

The Kindle Fire rival is now approaching an impressive sales metric of one million units per month, according to the device manufacturer Asustek.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the company's chief financial officer David Chang was quoted as saying, "At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million."

This is the first grasp we've had on actual sales figures of the device. Google, which is usually very good about being transparent and honest with its specific sales information, has been hesitant to provide very specific details about the Nexus 7's performance.

It certainly seems like it had nothing to be embarrassed about. The $200 tablet has been generating very big demand and it has certainly given Amazon's $200 Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD a run for their money.

Obviously, there isn't a lot of evidence yet to suggest that the Nexus 7 is having any kind of similar impact on the iPad market. Granted, they are different markets because the iPad is a bigger device and tailored to a different audience.

The real test will be the iPad Mini versus the Nexus 7, or potentially the iPad versus the yet-to-be-revealed Nexus 10, since those would be apples-to-apples comparisons.
