Asus’s Google Nexus tablet soon to be reality

Google’s biggest event of the year happens this week, and you know what that means.

Get ready for a lot of major announcements on all aspects of Google’s company, admittedly the most exciting of which for most consumers is Android.

And according to Gizmodo, which claims to have received a leaked document for its representatives at the show, the showstopping announcement might be the introduction of the Google-branded tablet.

Although the Nexus phones are seen as one streamlined line of devices, they’ve been made by different manufacturers and available on different carriers so Google doesn’t look like it’s playing favorites.

It’s been rumored for some time that Google was also toiling behind-the-scenes to come up with a Nexus-branded tablet, but the question of which manufacturer would get the honors has been largely mysterious.

Earlier this year, it came out of the woodwork that Asus might the manufacturer of choice, since it is well known for creating low-cost electronics.

The document mentions the following technical specs:

– 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor

– GeForce 12-core GPU

– 1 GB of RAM

– NFC functionality with Google Wallet

– IPS display

– 1280×800 resolution

– 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera

There will apparently be two models – an 8 GB version for $199 and a 16 GB one for $249. That cements earlier reports that Google wanted to ensure a very low price point.

It no doubt learned that Amazon figured out the secret sauce to a successful Android tablet – low cost and brand name recognition.

We’re sure to see more official details later this week.
