Washington DC – United Airlines has added iPod/iPhone connectivity to its transatlantic flights. Passengers in first and business class (economy flyers are out of luck) can now connect their gadgets to a special 30-pin cable that will show video to 15.4-inch screens. The cable will also charge the device.
“Our guests may now watch or listen to what they want, when they want with programming they choose,” said Graham Atkinson, executive vice president of United Airlines.
While this sounds like a nice feature, but most iPod/iPhone users are probably content with watching video on their small screens. In addition, music lovers probably already own expensive earbuds or headphones that are vastly superior to anything the airline would use for their entertainment systems.
The first iPod-friendly flight was United #936 from Washington DC to Switzerland. United Airlines says it will be updating most of its transatlantic fleet over the next two years, but unfortunately, domestic travelers won’t have such connectivity.
