Earlier today, we reported that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has
dropped below 70% for the first time nearly nine years. Even worse,
market research firm Net Applications now estimates Microsoft’s Windows
market share at less than 90%, which is still an impressive number, but
a lower level than most PC users may remember. We had to go back to
Windows 3.11 to find similar market share data.
A group of developers called The Dev Team unveiled the perhaps most
significant iPhone modification so far by porting basic parts of Linux
to the iPhone and iPod touch. The bare-bone Linux 2.6 kernel port shows
only the command line prompt, but higher-level parts of the operating
system, such as graphics and networking, are also in the works. As
exciting as it sounds, running Linux on the iPhone is most likely only
a basic step towards a far more ambitious goal - running Android on the
iPhone.
Transmeta, once a sparkling startup that set out to beat Intel and AMD
in mobile computing, announced that it will be acquired by Novafora.
The company’s most famous employee, Linux inventor Linus Torvalds, kept
the buzz and rumor mill about the company throughout its stealth phase
alive and guaranteed a flashy technology announcement in early 2000.
Almost nine years later Transmeta’s journey is over.
