New York (NY) - In response to stiffer competition from cable operators, satellite company DirecTV is working on supplying its own high-speed Internet service.

DirecTV's CEO Chase Carey made an announcement this week, saying that it will deliver Internet access through power lines in a major U.S. city next year.

Cable companies like Time Warner and Comcast have been offering high-speed Internet for years.  Time Warner's Road Runner service is the market leader in commercial broadband access.  Carey said DirecTV is looking at Wi-Max technology to bring high-speed access to customers, and that a partnership with rival EchoStar might be possible in developing a national broadband system.

"We think it would be a good thing to have a third, a fourth or a fifth entrant in broadband and if we can be helpful in pushing that forward and if there's an opportunity for us to intelligently invest in doing so, we would," Carey was quoted as saying in a Reuters story.
