AMD said it laid off 500 employees, in its second round of job cuts this year. The staff has been cut globally, across different departments, levels of employment and facility locations. The affected employees were notified on Wednesday.
As AMD is preparing to implement its Asset Smart strategy, roll out its first 45 nm processors and appears to be seeing the light at the of the tunnel, the company somewhat surprised us with another round of job cuts. According to Reuters, AMD cut 500 people from its staff of 15,500.
Last month AMD also came to an agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Investment to spin off its manufacturing arm. This deal is valued at $2.1 billion and did not include the commitment by ATIC to invest $3.6 billion in the manufacturing facilities within the next five years.
AMD will be hosting an analyst day in an attempt to provide product roadmap updates.
