Optical disc drive (ODD) makers in Japan and South Korea area launching another price war for slim DVD burners, with quotes for the segment reduced to less than $40, compared to $42-45 in the first quarter of 2007 and $45-48 in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to sources. Makers such as Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba were cutting their OEM quotes amid a more conservative order-placing attitude from notebook brands, ODD makers indicated.
