China has pledged to intensify its ongoing crackdown against Internet pornography.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, security forces arrested 5,394 citizens and initiated 4,186 criminal investigations over pornography related charges during 2009.

"[Police will] intensify punishments for Internet operations that violate laws and regulations," the Ministry confirmed in an official statement translated by Reuters.

"Strengthen monitoring of information. Press Internet service providers to put in place preventive technology."

It should be noted that opponents of the crackdown have accused the government of using pornography as an excuse to tighten its control over the Internet and stifle political dissent.

Indeed, Beijing has sporadically banned a number of non-pornographic websites, including Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, Facebook and various Chinese content sharing pages.
