Google News changes the face of journalism
A journalist has claimed in a measured column that the Google News "algorithm" has fundamentally changed the nature of the medium.
Sumner Lemon said on a Colby journalism site that a highly ranked story on Google News (GN) will shuttle huge traffic to web sites and make money for publishers.
But, continues Lemon, the rankings will sway editorial copy tasting, and that can pervert what's being reported.
He says: "For journalists, news sites that merely chase the big story of the moment face a difficult and uncertain future. When information is widely available, it loses its value."
He thinks journalists should dig, not digg, a little deeper, and they will always have readers. Here.
